Scandal Recap: The Miseducation of Susan Ross

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t seen Scandal Season 5, Ep. 16 – “The Miseducation of Susan Ross.”

“It could be worse. We could be making stuff up.” — Quinn

Last week Olivia received an envelope containing the promise of ruining Susan Ross’ campaign. Instead, the contents and the path it sent Ms. Pope down did more to ruin her own soul than any damage done to Susan Ross or her campaign.

Turns out that, one, Susan lied about being married to her war hero husband and, two, said war hero husband was not the biological father of their child. The father is actually the sweetest convict you’ll ever meet who would rather spend a decade in jail than ruin his ex girlfriend’s chance at the presidency. Even when Susan cheats its with the most endearing person possible.

But Olivia is pitted not only against Fitz in this battle for the presidency, but also her father so she is not messing around. In fact, as she threw chairs aside and threatened a man’s life (in full view of security cameras, by the way) she looked almost exactly like her father. She has latched onto the idea of Mellie as president, perhaps as some sort of mea culpa for the years of suffering she put her through, and she is not letting go.

And now this ruthless, Rowan-like drive has taken its first victim. Rather than out Susan and ruin Casey’s life, Ronnie chose to take his own life. Susan really does have a knack for picking men that will do just about anything for her. But then, who wouldn’t?

Meanwhile, Mellie dealt with being completely unlikeable by reading some mean tweets. I suggest sneaking her some moonshine before public appearances. I think we can all agree that drunk Mellie is the best Mellie.

Oh and Cyrus used his ex-B6-13 lackey to hurt Frankie’s campaign in the name of furthering his own power over the candidate, but is that really news?

In the end Fitz and Olivia shared a drink and made a playful agreement to cleanly competing with each other this time around. Everyone laughed and smiled and completely ignored the fact that Olivia has already driven a man to suicide as part of her campaign tactics. Clearly the clean campaigning starts….now.
