Lets just get this out of the way before we get started; yes, it appears that Ryan Murphy and Co. sat down and said, “hey, lets just combine our two most successful shows into one show and then go dive into our piles of money.” And thus, Scream Queens was born; with all the campy goodness of (early seasons) Glee’s teen satire and American Horror Story’s campy take on diva filled horror. The result is high camp and hysterical satire starring grande dames of high regard and those who aspire to such titles. In short, it’s a hell of a lot of fun.
Yes, I said roughly the same things about Glee and AHS before they decayed into useless bits of celluloid before our very eyes (metaphorically speaking), but there is no denying that those shows started off at phenomenon levels of quality. Will Scream Queens be able to maintain this level of brilliance into a second season, or even through this season? Obviously not, but we’re not here to discuss the inevitable. We’re here to discuss the pilot.
And the pilot was a damn good time.
Scream Queens opened on a party at Kappa Kappa Tau in 1995. A girl has a surprise baby in the bathtub, but her sorority sisters are too busy jamming to TLC’s “Waterfalls” to help a girl out, so she bleeds out in the bath. Flash forward twenty years and there’s a new crop of Kappa girls wreaking havoc on campus and a red masked devil out to kill them. Are these two incidents connected? Undoubtedly. Who’s behind the mask? It hardly matters. Are people even actually being killed? Oh my God, it makes it so much better that they aren’t!
Throw in Emma Roberts at her bitchy best and Jamie Lee Curtis giving a master class in sinister scheming and I am here for it!
Sorry if I’m raving a little here, its just not too often that a series this fresh debuts on network television. But I’ll tone it down to save later embarrassment (see paragraph two). Suffice to say, this was a damn good pilot and those are hard to pull off.
Final Verdict: You know you wanna keep watching it, but then you knew that before I wrote a single word.
*Scream Queens airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on FOX.
