2015 Golden Globe Predictions: Television

2015 Golden Globe Predictions: Television

Time again to discuss the nonsense that are the Golden Globe nominations. This time we turn our attention to the small screen where the HFPA really lets their crazy flag fly.

Kyle Owen is back once again to share in the opinions, so you can’t say you’re not fully informed.

Note: As always, when I say “Will Win” I am basing it on the current odds and buzz and when I say “Should Win” I am basing it on my own personal and deeply biased opinion.

Best Drama Series

House of Cards
The Affair
Downton Abbey
The Good Wife
Game of Thrones

What Should Win: Mad Men
What Will Win: House of Cards

Ok, I promise I won’t spend this whole post being bitter about Mad Men’s shut out. Just know the bitterness is still there. Anyway, all of these shows are pretty great (though I do question if this season of Downton Abbey really deserved a nod) and could take the win. The HFPA are known to award new shows so The Affair has a pretty decent shot, but unless the members of the HFPA want to be pushed in front of a train, they’ll likely give it to House of Cards.

Kyle: Most of these shows certainly deserve their nomination in the category, and although I strongly believe House of Cards should take home the trophy, I think it will go to The Affair for its excellent performances and originality.  I won’t be upset by any means.

Best Actor in a Drama

Clive Owen, The Knick
Kevin Spacey, House of Cards
Dominic West, The Affair
Live Schreiber, Ray Donovan
James Spader, The Blacklist

Who Should Win: Kevin Spacey
Who Will Win: Kevin Spacey

For all the same reasons stated above and also because he’s Kevin freakin’ Spacey and he deserves all the awards.

What she said.

Best Actress in a Drama

Viola Davis, How to Get Away with Murder
Ruth Wilson, The Affair
Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife
Robin Wright, House of Cards
Claire Danes, Homeland

Who Should Win: Robin Wright
Who Will Win: Viola Davis

Robin Wright still wins my vote, but the HFPA’s love for all things new has Viola Davis looking like a sure thing. Honestly, any one of these women (and some not even nominated) could take this award and it would be deserved.

Okay, I’m not a Card Hard, but this goes to Robin Wright who really got to sink talented teeth into a character that truly dominates the screen.

Best Comedy Series

Orange is the New Black
Transparent
Jane the Virgin
Silicon Valley
Girls

What Should Win: Orange is the New Black
What Will Win: Orange is the New Black

Again, Transparent could be a dark horse here or even Jane the Virgin because hell, if they give Brooklyn Nine-Nine a Golden Globe why not Jane the Virgin?  But my gut is telling me Orange is the New Black will continue to ride out its buzz.

^Great dig.  I think Transparent will get its moment, but Orange is the New Black takes it home this year.

Best Actor in a Comedy

Jeffery Tambor, Transparent
Ricky Gervais, Derek
William H. Macy, Shameless
Louis C.K., Louie
Don Cheadle, House of Lies

Who Should Win: Jeffery Tambor
Who Will Win: Jeffery Tambor

And anyway, this is where the Transparent buzz is guaranteed to pay off.

I almost want to disagree so she doesn’t get the satisfaction of being right.  But I won’t.  For now.  Jeffery Tambor is a lock.

Best Actress in a Comedy

Gina Rodriguez, Jane the Virgin
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
Taylor Schilling, Orange is the New Black
Lena Dunham, Girls
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie

Who Should Win: Taylor Schilling
Who Will Win: Gina Rodriguez

Rodriguez has the odds right now. Don’t ask me, I don’t understand the HFPA either.

I don’t think it’ll be Rodriguez, but in fact Taylor Schilling.  Believe in yourself, Devin.

Best TV Movie or Miniseries

Fargo
True Detective
The Normal Heart
Olive Kitteridge
The Missing

What Should Win: Fargo
What Will Win: Fargo

Fargo, which I once described as perfect, faces some stiff competition from True Detective and The Normal Heart. But, Fargo is perfect and both True Detective and, to a lesser extent, The Normal Heart were always more about the hype than the actual product. I can’t imagine anyone but Fargo taking this.

Will you stop! You’re making this really hard for me.  I think The Normal Heart and True Detective have both lost the buzz around them, yet Fargo still feels fresh and left us wanting more.  And god, we loved, and loved to hate, those characters.

Best Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries

Matthew McConaughey, True Detective
Woody Harrelson, True Detective
Billy Bob Thorton, Fargo
Mark Ruffalo, The Normal Heart
Martin Freenman, Fargo

Who Should Win: Woody Harrelson
Who Will Win: Matthew McConaughey

I am so over this McConaissance. If he can successfully play someone from, I don’t know, Fargo for more than five minutes I might reconsider, but that’s obviously not happening anytime soon. Yeah, as long as the character is from the south and babbles on about nonsense he’s golden, but I require a tad more range from actors who have periods of history reworked to incorporate their name. The biggest downside of his resurgence is that Woody Harrelson’s obviously stronger performance is repeatedly overlooked.

Marin Freeman has it for me here.  He was fascinating to watch at every step as Lester, walking a fine line of either needing a hug or a pair of cuffs.

Best Actress in a TV Movie or Miniseries

Frances McDormand, Olive Kitteridge
Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Honorable Woman
Jessica Lange, American Horror Story: Freak Show
Allison Tolman, Fargo
Frances O’Connor, The Missing

Who Should Win: Alison Tolman
Who Will Win: Frances McDormand

Alison Tolman gave the breakthrough performance of the year, which could get her the win from this crowd. But, its more likely it will go to the old guard, which is also deserved. Win/win. Unless you’re the other three nominees.

It’s Fargo either way here, but you may be pleasantly surprised to see Alison Tolman delivering her acceptance speech.

Best Supporting Actor in a Drama, Comedy, TV Movie or Miniseries

Bill Murray, Olive Kitteridge
Matt Bomer, The Normal Heart
Alan Cumming, The Good Wife
Jon Voight, Ray Donovan
Colin Hanks, Fargo

Who Should Win: Alan Cumming
Who Will Win: Matt Bomer

This summer I saw Tony Award winner Alan Cumming in Cabaret and I would really like to be able to say, this summer I saw Tony Award and Golden Globe winner Alan Cumming in Cabaret.

Matt Bomer delivered an exceptional performance and underwent an extreme transformation for his role in The Normal Heart.  It’s typical to award actors for this kind of role.  Typical, but not unjustified in many cases.

Best Supporting Actress in a Drama, Comedy, TV Movie or Miniseries

Kathy Bates, American Horror Story: Freak Show
Uzo Aduba, Orange is the New Black
Michelle Monaghan, True Detective
Allison Janney, Mom
Joanne Froggatt, Downton Abbey

Who Should Win: Uzo Aduba
Who Will Win: Uzo Aduba

Uzo’s biggest competition here is Michelle Monaghan who is severely underrated and Joanne Froggratt who had a particularly meaty storyline this season and really did wonders with it. But Uzo took a character that could have easily bled into over-the-top territory and turned her into the heart of the show.

Crazy-Eyes for the win!
