Why Scandal makes me cheat

Why Scandal makes me cheat
When Olivia and Fitz cheat, so do my husband and I with our one cheat meal of the week.

The hot and steamy romance on Scandal makes me cheat. Not in an extramarital affair, but with my eating choices. I can be focused and disciplined with my nutrition all week, but come Thursday nights, I want pizza and buffalo shrimp salads delivered for my husband and I, and a heaping large dose of some “lettin’ alone.”

For two years my husband and I hadn’t even watched the program. Thursday nights are usually filled with errands of chauffeuring our teen daughters across town to choir rehearsal, and us hopefully being able to get the twins to their Nana’s house so hubby and I could go to church. We’d come home and Facebook would be all abuzz with the latest Scandal drama of which we were oblivious to the lascivious acts of Liv and Fitz.

That all changed this past summer though.

Hubby and I were lucky to have four weeks without the girls as they visited their older sister in Georgia, so we were left with hours on end only to discover that there really is nothing on the hundred something channels we have on cable TV. What did we do? We decided to check out the first year of Scandal.

The first episode was a’iight. The second slightly intriguing, and by the third we had popcorn and had gone into an uninterrupted Scandal marathon. Beside some other things we had going on this Summer, needless to say, in a week’s time we were caught up on not just the first, but both seasons of Scandal! Let’s just say, “We handled it.”

Now that summer has come and gone, the girls are back and on a brief hiatus from choir rehearsal, and after a long week of workouts and worship at various churches across town, we decided to stay in tonight. Call us heathens. We don’t care. We wanted to see the season premier of Scandal too!

But not just see it. Experience it in all its glory. So what did we do? Order pizza and buffalo shrimp salads and plop ourselves right in front of the TV just like any other normal American. And that we did.

Comfort food and prime time TV makes me feel like I’ve actually relaxed for just a moment. Who needs the discipline of a meal plan when Olivia’s on anyway wielding enough power to burn a gazillion calories for us all.

Thank heavens for cheat meals. Today I taught four fitness classes back-to-back as I do every Tuesday/Thursday and these are the days I’m most fatigued. Usually I replenish with meals packed with protein so that I feed my muscles and starve the fat.

But not tonight. Not with Scandal.

You’ve escaped another fiasco Olivia. I say we call it even and keep my cheating and yours a continued secret for now. Tomorrow, we’ll handle it.

  • I don't know what it is about Thursday nights, but I'm totally the same way. I just want pizza and a fun dessert and lots and lots of television. And maybe wine.

  • Julie, thank you for sharing. It's always nice to find out someone can relate. Now what I have to make certain is that my Friday and the rest of the weekend don't turn out to be cheat days too.
