NLCS Game 5: Matt Szczur's Underwear

NLCS Game 5: Matt Szczur's Underwear

Addison Russell
Had his own secret weapon
Szczur’s underwear

If you’re superstitious then this might be the biggest contribution a non-roster player has made to his team in the playoffs. If your more rational, it’s just a fun sidebar as the Cubs move closer to …

During NLCS Game 4 we learned it was Matt Szczur’s bat that helped Anthony Rizzo get back his swing. Thursday night during Game 5, one of those ridiculous during-the-action dugout interviews that Fox is so fond of provided an actual entertaining nugget of information. It turns out that Addison Russell, who broke out of his slump along with Rizzo, was wearing Matt Szczur’s underwear during Game 4.

Both Rizzo and Russell contributed again as the Cubs beat the Dodgers 8-4 to bring a 3-2 advantage home for Saturday night’s potentially historic Game 6.

Rizzo’s first inning double started the game’s scoring, and Russell’s 2-run homer in the 6th broke a 1-1 tie and put the Cubs ahead for good. The Cubs scratched together 5 runs in the 8th, three of those on a base-clearing double by Javy Baez, to put the game out of reach.

Potential NLCS MVP Baez also contributed on defense, of course. When Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez tried to bunt his way on to begin the 7th inning, Baez made a barehanded pickup and his throw beat Gonzalez to first base.

So many Dodgers fans left early that there might have been mostly Cubs fans in the ballpark when the game ended.

The Cubs are now just 1 win away from their first World Series appearance in 71 years. There, I’ve said it. So much for superstition.
