Haunt Review 2017: Statesville Haunted Prison & City of the Dead

Well it’s been a few years since our last visit, but Team Gregula decided to check out the mother of all haunts in the Chicagoland area – Statesville Haunted Prison! Located at Siegel’s Cottonwood Farm in Lockport, IL, it’s a bit of a hike from Chicago city limits but we were pretty sure it would be worth it.

We got there shortly after 7PM on a mild Thursday night, lines weren’t really too long yet so we were able to get in with little wait. There was plenty of wait entertainment outside including evil clowns, zombies and scarecrows whose joy in their afterlife is to sneak up behind and scare the living daylights out of you.

With Statesville Haunted Prison, expect a lot of actor interaction with the patrons. You are basically treated like a prisoner through the entire experience, the guards are rough and show no mercy. Before you even get into the haunted house everyone is herded into a giant box-like structure where two clowns harass everyone and they even pick out a a couple of people especially to try and humiliate them. One of them just happened to be Da Count to Cousin Jessi’s and my surprise. But being the cool vamp that Count Gregula is, it was very hard to embarrass him so the other girl chosen got the worst of it haha!

After what seems like a million years or at least a million hours, we finally go into the actual waiting area which is basically a dark passageway and waited even more. This haunt sure is about waiting! But anyway we were shoved into another room where a big scary guard screamed at all of us to get in and was not shy about pointing out folks in the crowd to try and embarrass them. Then there was another guy who had an actual LIVE rat in his hands who was trying to scare us but the darn rat was so cute Cousin Jessi just had to make friends with him!

Statesville Haunted Prison is definitely EXTREME, you are assaulted from all angles by various undead inmates who shove you from room to room. There are actual LIVE roaches in glass cases and a creepy doctor looking guy invites you to pet one….ew! We also had to walk through a filthy shower and encountered a nearly naked guy who decided to serenade our mummy cousin, teehee.

After the fun with psychos and clowns and dominatrixes, we finally got to exit. But OH NO the fun isn’t over yet kids, because next up is City of the Dead! This pit of despair is run by redneck zombies, one who played a mean acoustic guitar and another with a live snake OH EM GEE! From voodoo jungles (more snakes!) to dusty catacombs, this is a city you may not want to end up in!

Statesville Haunted Prison has plenty to do after the haunt is over with games, zombie paintball and a merch barn full of souvenirs and goodies to take home. Team Gregula really had a good time and cannot wait again for next year!
