Pin 52 Challenge: Brown Eggs and Jam Jars

Though I read incessantly, I don’t buy many books: I’m definitely a library junkie. So, when I actually buy a book – especially a cookbook- it has to be pretty special. Since I have a Pinterest category about books to read, I figure book reviews qualify for this challenge too.

brown eggsIt’s time to dust off your library card, or visit your favorite local bookstore, and pick up a copy of Brown Eggs and Jam Jars by Aimée Wimbush-Bourque.

Truth be told, I was first drawn to the book for the title and pictures. I make my husband crazy by putting everything into jars- open a bag of chips, cereal, or snacks and they’ll be in a jar by the time you’re going back for seconds.

Curious about “brown eggs?” They have nothing to do with the chicken’s diet, it’s the type of chicken: Rhode Island Red, French Maran, and Plymouth Rocks lay brown eggs.

Back to the book.

A- the photos are stunning. Gorgeous enough that maybe I’ll just forget about making any of the recipes and simply frame the photos for my kitchen instead.  Except…

B- the recipes are really good.  So far I’ve made the Zucchini Corn Bread and Crispy Rosemary Roast Potatoes, but I have my eye on several more to make soon. The book is divided by seasons, so seasonal produce is the focus. The book is more than recipes though…

C-while you’ll find personal stories, there are also “Homesteading” tips throughout the book that help you create a simpler, more natural lifestyle.

I think the simplicity is what I enjoy most about Brown Eggs & Jam Jars. Sure, there are plenty of cookbooks out there that imply a “simple” lifestyle, but the recipes are complex or involve 800 ingredients from 15 different stores. I’m not a foodie…I just want to eat good food.

And, Aimee Wimbush-Bourque seems to follow the same philosophy as my family when it comes to meals…

These recipes aren’t about spending hours in the kitchen cooking. Instead, they make you want to call your family and friends to come enjoy them with you.
