Shop Small Day 231: Honey Hill Orchard

It’s about that time of year again: more neighbors fall decorations are popping up every weekend. If part of your fall tradition includes a trip to the pumpkin patch, you’re in luck…especially if you’re looking for one similar to those you remember as a kid.
Somehow, over the years, pumpkin farms became less about the cider and pumpkins, and more about inflatable slides and pony rides. And pumpkins that cost $100.

No thank you.

Honey Hill Orchards has been around since 1965, but the barn itself dates back to the early 1900’s. Housed inside the barn now is their Country Store: apples, cider, honey (from their own beehives), and specialty gifts.

imageI know what you’re thinking, where are the donuts? They have a separate bakery building for those! I don’t even like donuts and these are delicious. And, because they know you’ll want more once you get home, you can also buy them buy the dozen frozen- just heat up a couple whenever the mood strikes.

End of October they also pumpkin donuts available. You can pick up all of your fall bakery needs since they also have pies and homemade caramel apples & candy.

imageIf you prefer to pick your pumpkins off the vine, instead of an overflowing tractor, then Honey Hills is definitely for you. You’ll find them in all shapes and sizes, and the search feels more festive.

Check their website; depending on the day you go, you may be able to pick your own apples too.

There is no entrance fee- bonus! Take note, though, while they take credit cards in the Country Store, U-pick pumpkins and apples are cash/check only.

Even though Waterman may sound like a haul, it’s only about 10 minutes from Dekalb and convenient to/from 88.

So, if you think a pumpkin patch visit should be more about tradition than a wallet-emptying carnival, plan this year’s visit to Honey Hill Orchard. Bring me home an extra apple-cider donut too!
