If you’re heading up to any of the Dells resorts, be forewarned, the food can get expensive. And redundant. Chicken tenders, hot dogs, and rarely a fruit to be found. Although I usually hate having to cook on vacation, this trip is the exception. Since we were there for a baseball tournament, snacks, sandwiches, and a healthy breakfast were necessary.
Zinke’s is the only full grocery store in the Dells, and it’s been a local staple since 1942.
Besides dairy necessities, you can also pick up deli meats. Of course, first you’ll have to make it past their daily fresh baked donuts and breads!
My favorite department, though, is their extensive liquor area- don’t judge- it’s vacation! Plus, they carry a great assortment of New Glarus beer. Which, is a must-have anytime you’re in Wisconsin since they don’t sell it over the border (and worth a trip to the town itself!).
Think there’s no history to the Dells? Fred Zinke was born in 1899 as the youngest of 13 kids. He opened the market on Oak Street in 1942 and quickly gained popularity as a great butcher. By 1946 he needed a larger location. By 1956 he expanded even farther into today’s location on Washington. By 1978 his two sons (Gordon & Ken) had taken over the business, sadly Fred passed away in 1979. In 1988, oldest son Gordon retired and Ken continued Zinke’s with his son, Dan. It’s now run by Dan and his wife, but Ken still visits the store daily to “check the quality” of the coffee and donuts!
Next time you’re in the Dells, skip the mega-Walmart (10 inconvenient miles outside of town anyway!) and support the local Zinke’s Village Market.
