I want to make Mondo a Project Runway winner. Let's give him $100,000.

So by writing this I’m admitting to a guilty pleasure. I love watching “Project Runway.

Mondo Guerra from lifetime.com

I’ve been following the fashion design show on Lifetime all season and rooting for  Mexican-American designer, Mondo Guerra, 32, of Denver. I can’t believe he didn’t win on the season finale Thursday night.

I don’t want to dis’ the winner, Gretchen Jones, whose style can be described as boho chic. She should be congratulated.

But I was truly inspired by Mondo’s designs, the use of calaveras, or skulls, he made with Day of the Dead and Mexico City circuses in mind.

Earlier in the season he designed a colorful purple print fabric with crosses, later revealing to the judges the meaning of the symbol. He is HIV positive. Even his own parents didn’t know but he decided to reveal this on the show when prodded by judge Nina Garcia.

“I feel a lot better. I feel free,” Mondo said after announcing on national television that he has been HIV positive the last 10 years.

He is a role model who is needed at this time when reports of bullying of gay youth are on the rise.

Last month, Mondo held a benefit for the Colorado AIDS Project and Rainbow Alley, a youth drop-in support program at GLBT Center of Colorado. He co-hosted the event with fellow designer Michael Costello.

Mondo is brave and bold and gauging from reactions on Twitter and Facebook most people think he should have won Project Runway. Heidi Klum tried to convince the other judges he should win.

I agree with this Tweet from @BethReads “I say we start a fund and pitch in a couple bucks each to give Mondo the $100,000 he deserves.”

So Mondo we’re waiting for your Web site. Set up a Paypal account. I’m ready to make a donation.

Imagine if 20,000 people gave $5 each. That would give him the $100,000 prize money.

I would prefer to buy some of his clothes. I love the top with pink, black and blue lines, he said was inspired by Aztec pyramids. I’d love one of the purses with a calavera design.

I just like the idea of supporting someone I consider an artist who celebrates his culture and advocates for social issues. I also love how Mondo said he was inspired by his grandmother. He stayed true to himself.

“Even if I don’t win, or make it to the top three, I want to show them who I am,” Mondo told Tim Gunn in the penultimate show.

I don’t think coming in second makes Mondo a loser. He was a fan favorite and I hope he finds a way to keep inspiring us with his sense of humor and his passion.
