Planting Tulips With a Purpose

Tulip planting season has arrived in Chicago and while you’re placing orders or searching garden centers for bulbs, I’d like you to consider two pink tulips.October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The American Cancer Society’s Plant It Pink campaign is aimed at raising awareness in the fight against breast cancer. By planting ACS CAN tulips you’re helping raise awarness about cancer among your fellow Chicagoans and raising funds that provides thousands of women access to lifesaving cancer screening and treatment. Chicagoans can order Plant It Pink tulips here. The first bulb pick up day is October 17, 2010 and the second day is October 23, 2010 at MSABC Monstrose Harbor. 

Did you admire the pink tulips along The Magnificent Mile this past spring? The pink tulips planted by The Greater North Michigan Avenue Association are “Tulipa Maggie Daley.” The first tulip named for a Mayoral First Lady. These tulips took 12 years to create and GNMAA is making 1,700 bulbs available for purchase at $5 per bulb.     What a cool campaign! I was really, really hoping they had a Michigan version of this. (They do have it in IO, KS, MN, and NB, OH, and WI though.) I really like 'Maggie Daley' and would have given some to Carole who's a bc survivor.

    I'm surprised to learn that they don't have it in Michigan. I'm not a fan of pink, but I'd plant Maggie Daley because of their history and because the money goes to a good cause.
