Cubs make minor trade, confuse Twitter

Here’s the news as the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves exchanged Arodys Vizcaino and Tommy La Stella, along with some international bonus slot money:

Now here’s a bunch of ways we can take this:

  • OMG the Cubs are about to trade somebody!
  • The Cubs liked La Stella’s bat control and on-base skills.
  • The Cubs didn’t feel like stashing Vizcaino anymore and he wasn’t lighting up the field anyway with his 98mph+ fastball.
  • This is not that big of a deal since the Cubs couldn’t use their IFA money anyway, since they blew their loads last summer signing all the big time prospects.

I don’t think the Cubs are going to bank on essentially a backup infielder who can only adequately play second base and has very little power to trade from their middle infield depth.  So I would think that based on previous statements from the front office, this is just a move to get a decent stick in the system and figure out how it shakes out later.  Could they still trade guys like Javier Baez, Addison Russell, Arismendy Alcantara or even Starlin Castro?  Sure, but I think that trade, if it happens, would be for an independent rationale than this transaction.

Kinda fun to watch Cubs Twitter go nuts for a while, though!  By the way, if you missed it, we have one less day to wait until Cubs baseball.

  • Cardinals get Heyward......
    Jays get Martin.......
and the Cubs get LaStella !

Yes, a Cubs World Series is a Dream.

  • I am 99% sure that Theo will not be able to sign Lester.

There was a point beyond which it didn't make sense to spend on Russell Martin. Given Heyward's proximity to free agency you could probably guess why the Cubs might not have been too keen to trade for just a one-year rental.

  • If Theo is not going spend all these millions Ricketts gave him to spend on free agents.......then we should have people watching the airports in case Theo runs off to Bolivia with all that money.

  • In reply to CubsTalk:

If Ricketts in fact has that money, which has been open to debate.

You also seem to assume that Theo can go to an ATM and cash a $60 million check, or has sufficient computer hacking skills to transmit the money down there without leaving an electronic audit trail.
