Cubs September Call-Ups (UPDATES on Olt & Rizzo, rotation)

As we surmised over the Labor Day weekend, it seems that both Eric Jokisch and Rafael Lopez (Rule 5 eligible this offseason) will be joining the Cubs in September:

Straily was optioned to Iowa upon trade from Oakland and Vizcaino was optioned to Iowa after spring training so they are considered “recalls”; ditto for Schlitter, Rosscup and Lake. Jokisch and Lopez had to be added to the 40-man, and to make room, Justin Ruggiano, who had the leg injury, was moved to the 60 day disabled list. The 40-man roster should now be full up.

Mike Olt and Josh Vitters ended the season on Iowa’s disabled list and were not called up.  It’s also interesting to note that while still on the roster, Dallas Beeler and Chris Rusin weren’t called up.  Even with a proposed six-man rotation going forward, there’s not enough room to give everyone a shot, so some guys are just going to be left out.

These players have a little less than a month of action left to show what they can do against mostly contending teams.  Small sample size and all that, but they need to make the most of their opportunity.

UPDATES 4:55 PM: There were some roster issues trickling in as the school day was ending but we should be on top of this.  Mike Olt could still come up at some point in September, but Dallas Beeler has reached his pitch/innings limit and therefore isn’t called up.  Also from Carrie Muskat:

As Anthony Rizzo says, he just wants to make sure he’s healthy for next year when the turnaround really hits high gear, and I’m all for that. Also about the rotation:

There was a report on Twitter that Edwin Jackson was throwing a bullpen today but now I can’t find it. Jackson, Dan Straily and Eric Jokisch could find a start in the final month so that may be something to look forward to. Well, maybe not Jackson, but you know…
