Trade season is upon us and the Cubs have broken the major deal seal with the Baltimore Orioles. The Cubs are sending Scott Feldman and Steve Clevenger to Baltimore for Jake Arrieta, Pedro Strop, and international bonus slots.

Arrietta and Strop are two pitchers who are struggling mightily this year so they will fit right in with the Cubs bullpen. The major piece the Cubs are getting back are the international bonus slots which will allow them to continue their pursuit of Eloy Jimenez since they’ve already signed two guys in SS Gleyber Torres and RHP Jefferson Mejia. Never mind the part where Keith Law thought Steve Clevenger‘s name was “Tony” but we’ll blame it on autocorrect.
Baltimore needed pitching and they got it. The Cubs needed some arms in the pen and more importantly international money and they got that. This is less about the names and more about the slots in my opinion, but we will keep you guys updated.
Update 12:37: I think Arrietta goes to the ‘pen and we may see a return of Carlos Villanueva to the rotation, but that’s just me. – ^MR
Update 12:44: The Orioles announced the pool amounts to be sent:
RT @Orioles: The O’s have also sent International Signing Bonus Slots 3 & 4 to Chicago. Clevenger has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk.

According to Baseball America, this amount equates to $237,200 and $150,900 respectively, or a total of $388,100 on top of the Cubs’ existing pool minus the amount spent on Torres and Mejia. This will give the Cubs some breathing room to sign Jimenez. Ken Rosenthal adds:
Arrieta could make #Orioles look bad if he figures it out. So could Strop if he rebounds. Feldman potential FA, unlikely to get qual offer..

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Ken. Rosenthal also says Chris Rusin will be the starter tonight, so there’s your roster move.
Update 12:58: Roster moves for new Cubs announced:
Arrieta will join @IowaCubs while Strop is expected to report to the Cubs later this week.
