FIGMENT comes to the Garfield Park Conservatory August 10-11

Have you heard about the FIGMENT event taking place this weekend? No? Let me tell you about it because it sounds pretty intriguing.

FIGMENT is an explosion of creative energy taking place at Garfield Park Conservatory August 10-11. This is a FREE, annual, family-friendly celebration of participatory art and culture where everything is possible (according to its organizers).

The idea is to see imaginations blossom with thousands of visitors interacting directly with nearly 50 participating art projects and more than 300 artists and volunteers. The concept began in New York and has spread to other cities in the last decade. It debuts in Chicago this weekend.
Artists, doers, and experimenters of all kinds are coming together in the firstever FIGMENT Chicago. The event will take place on Saturday August 10 from noon to 9 p.m. and Sunday August 11 from noon – 5 p.m. The goal is to bridge the audience to the artist, and vice versa, in an effort to build community and to highlight the creative process.

One innovative idea coming to FIGMENT is “Bring Your Bag Chicago.” Artists will gather 2,568 single use plastic bags – the amount Chicago uses every minute – and integrate them into an onsite installation. People will be able to sign these bags to show their support for the proposed ordinance to ban plastic bags. Organizers also ask that attendees bring a food donation for the Great Chicago Food Depository.
