While we are all busy celebrating the “traditional” holidays, the winter solstice usually passes without most people taking any notice at all. This is a totally missed opportunity.
The winter solstice (occurring on December 22 this year) is a wonderful opportunity for families to take notice of what’s going on around them in the natural world. It is a perfect time to cuddle up and reflect on the year past and what lies ahead for your family. What’s not to like about that?
I wrote a story about ways that families can celebrate the winter solstice together this year in the holiday issue of Going Places Magazine.
If you are interested in participating in event to mark the winter solstice, I have a great recommendation for you. On December 17, from 6-9 p.m., the North Park Nature Center will host its annual Winter Solstice Festival. Highlights include roasted chestnuts, crafts and a trail walk along a path lit with luminaries. Visit chicagoparkdistrict.com for details.
