This is one of the first years that I remember hosting Rosh Hashanah dinner. I find it fun and interesting to learn and share the meanings behind some of the traditional and common foods we serve and eat on the holiday.
Honey is for a sweet new year. The reason they are commonly shared with apples is because they are a readily plentiful fall fruit.
Pomegranates are to remind us to celebrate new and unusual experiences. There is also an interesting theory that there are 613 seeds in a pomegranate and 613 commandments in the Torah.
Carrots symbolize the desire for increased blessings in the new year.
Beets in Hebrew means remove. We eat them in hope our enemy departs. (I used yellow beets which are much less messy than red).
Fish are vigilant and swim constantly. We serve fish to reflect the desire to be aware of opportunities to do good.
The round challah is representative of the cyclical nature of the new year.
Regardless if you observe or not, I wish you all a sweet new beginning and a fresh transition into autumn.
