The Avett Brothers have been high on our music rotation lately. I love their unique sound and heartfelt lyrics, but never knew much about the brothers, family and band mates. Judd Apatow clearly does too as he and Michael Bonfiglio created May it Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers.
Filmed over two years during the making of their True Sadness album, the movie is an intimate look at the loyal North Carolinian brothers Scott and Seth Avett. Watching the two write a song in tandem, bouncing melodies and lyrics back and forth until they land on the final song demonstrates the special bond, brilliance and communication in their relationship.
Their third member, stand up bass player Bob Crawford, was the one that got the brothers out of the South and onto the road. His daughter, Hallie, was diagnosed with cancer at a young age and the film honors her fight and the impact the illness has on the entire band.
May it Last accurately depicts the little funny and serious moment of a good family’s highs and lows and is an insiders view into how beautiful music is created. It will be available to watch on HBO in 2018 and is currently showing in select theaters.
