Some may find my writing of bone broth slightly ironic as I promote Meatless Mondays and try to eat primarily a vegetable based diet. Yet, I continued to hear and began to research the vast benefits of nutrient dense bone broth and I knew I had to try it. This superfood is inexpensive, easy to make and tastes delicious.
Benefits of Bone broth include:
Provides adequate calcium for a dairy free diet
Heals and repairs the gut
Shiny healthy hair, teeth and nails
Eliminate wrinkles and create vibrant skin
Gets the toxins out
Reduces your need for meat and protein
To make bone broth you need patience, it is best if boiled for at least 24 hours and some simmer for 72 hours. This is because most of the vitamins and minerals are actually in the bone.
How to make Bone Broth
2 lbs oxtail or other meat bones
4 quarts water
10 garlic cloves
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 teaspoons of salt
Combine in large pot and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 8 – 72 hours.
It is fine to turn off the pot at night without opening the lid to let the heat escape. Turn back on first thing in the morning.
I drink the broth like a tea in the morning or any time throughout the day I am in the mood to snack. It is warm, rich, flavorful and amazes me how filling it actually is. It also can be used as a base for soups or for added flavor when cooking.
Store it in the freezer in a container or ice cube trays to easily remove the desired amount when needed.
Bonus: Give the cooled off bones to your dog and he/she will be in doggie heaven.
