As a self proclaimed foodie, I am always searching for great new restaurants and Chicago is a wonderful city for just that. I constantly look at reviews, ask friends about the places they have recently visited and am always on the hunt for the next gourmet meal.
Recently, I went to a wonderful spot called Blue 13 which is nestled in a quiet street in what otherwise tends to be the bustling River North area of the city. As a lover of art, design, food and architecture, River North has a special meaning to me. Given its proximity to the merchandise mart, unique lofts and abundant art/design showrooms and galleries it is only natural that great restaurants have been opening all over this neighborhood.
Blue 13 was what I call a hidden gem with great food and impeccable service. A friend decided to host his birthday there and we were pleasantly surprised to see a carefully crafted 5 course tasting menu that showed off the great range and unique flavors that make this restaurant’s menu so exciting. At its core, Blue 13 is a fine dining new American establishment that takes on a new twist on ambiance and décor. It has a non-pretentious feel to it yet its food is sophisticated and modern. Our tasting menu included some of the house specialties such as the lobster pizza, pork with bacon apples and black beans, a portion of the perfectly cooked halibut and we finished the night with ‘coffee and doughnuts’. Need I say more!? My favorite dish of the night, the lobster pizza, was a refreshing twist on the hundreds of routine pizza options in the city. The mix of lobster, manchego cheese, cipollini onions and garlic turned out to be a big hit with our group. Pizza…all grown up! Bottom line, I’m a fan. Edgy and cool décor with a rock and roll spin, great service and stellar food.
Deal Tip: Blue13 is currently offering ½ price bottles of wine on Tuesdays.
