Is your Executive Director about to retire? Hardly any nonprofit is ready for that, no matter how many discussions you’ve had about succession planning.
The impulse is to hire someone—anyone—right away, or to make the second-ranking person the boss. But here’s a better idea: hire an Interim Executive Director. She’ll keep the lights on while you decide on your next move, so that next move can be deliberate instead of accidental. She won’t impose a grand vision (like a new permanent hire) or expect to get the permanent job (like the promoted staff member). And if anything’s really wrong, she can fix it so the new leader inherits an agency free of crises and surprises.
Not to brag, but The Nonprofiteer—a/k/a Kelly Kleiman of NFP Consulting—is an experienced Interim Executive Director, who can do everything from simple caretaking to a full-blown turnaround. Contact her here or at KellyNFP@NFPConsultingChicago.com.
That is all.
