The Den Theatre presents the Chicago premiere of THE QUALITY OF LIFE. Dinah and Bill’s daughter died. The Christian Ohioans are trying to adapt to life without Cindy. Jeanette’s husband, Neil has terminal cancer. The free-spirited Californians are preparing for his journey’s end. Dinah and Jeannette are cousins. When Jeanette and Neil’s house burns down, Dinah convinces Bill to go west to visit their family. The social call turns into a free-for-all as relationships, religion, and death are debated. THE QUALITY OF LIFE is of high caliber!
Playwright Jane Anderson wrote a thought-provoking exploration of marriage. Anderson creates two very distinctly different couples. These two pairs challenge each other and the audience to explore life and death from different angles. The dialogue is witty AND gritty. Under the expert direction of Lia D. Mortensen, this *quality* cast is first-rate. Subtle touches showcase a long-term relationship… a lingering glance, a gentle touch, a scooting over. It’s hard to believe Jennifer Taylor (Dinah) & Stephen Spencer (Bill) and Ron Wells (Neil) & Liz Zweifler aren’t married. They sure act like it.
Taylor delights with her upbeat hospitality. Spencer infuriates with his judgmental stance. They are a homespun Midwest couple. Wells inspires as a resigned sage. Zweifler connects as a fiercely protective and outspoken wife. They are intellectual bohemians. It’s when each of them go against their natural facade and show snippets of raw emotion, the foursome engross with unexpected depth. Powerful!
Anderson’s script, Mortensen’s direction, and the quartet’s interpretation makes for an unforgettable life examination. QUALITY OF LIFE is all that!
