Beer Review: Toppling Goliath King Sue

One of the “whalez” of Midwestern beers turned up at my local Binny’s. So I snagged a 4-pack for a new “One Take Beer Review.” Toppling Goliath Brewing Co. is situated in the  town of Decorah, in Eastern Iowa. Since their founding in 2009, they have become famous for sought-after imperial stouts and hoppy pale... Read more »

Chicago FoBAB Craft Beer Weekend, November 8-10

Chicago FoBAB Craft Beer Weekend, November 8-10
Correction: I had the Toppling Goliath Barrel Slayer release at Binny's entered in the listing for Saturday. The release is on Friday (as in right now, as I type this). Thanks to those who pointed out the mistake. It's the weekend of the Festival of Barrel Aged Beer, at the UIC Forum on the near West Side. Which means several out-of-town brewers are sampling their wares throughout the Chicago region. Keep checking back, there may be more last minute updates. Also, we have another new brewery opening this weekend! 93 Octane Brewery is having their soft opening this weekend in St. Charles, at 825 Lincoln Highway. 93 Octane is managed by members of the family behind the PRIDE gas & convenience stores in Chicago and the western burbs, and will be carrying their canned beer...

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, October 4-6

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, October 4-6
Oktoberfest is slowly winding down in Chicago, and conjoining with regular Sunday Bears games. We have another big fest at the Field Museum, and pretty soon we'll be looking at Halloween parties. Be still, my aching typing fingers. This is the weekend of the Great American Beer Festival, Thursday through Saturday in Denver. The event is capped by a judging of beers in 109 style categories. I will try to bring the list of local winners shortly after they're announced...

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, March 22-24

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, March 22-24
The big thing for this weekend is that tickets are going on sale Saturday at noon for Dark Lord Day, being held May 18 at Three Floyds Brewpub. Meantime, there's some good news: Moody Tongue Brewing has announced they will be expanding by leasing the building that previously held Baderbräu. As it turns out, all of Baderbräu's brewing equipment was auctioned off, but Moody Tongue has already begun installing stainless, including moving their existing tanks once they've been emptied. Josh Noel, of course, has the story. Chicago Tribune...

Chicago Craft Beer Events, March 4-7

Chicago Craft Beer Events, March 4-7
We are lurching into March, a cold week, and Mardi Gras. Which for some reason, has given us a new category of Paczki beers. Not to mention Pulaski Day. And this coming Saturday, you can get some culture—yeast culture, that is—at the Field Museum with the Chicago Beer Fest. Tickets won't be sold at the door, so check this Eventbrite link...

Chicago Craft Beer Events, December 17-20

Chicago Craft Beer Events, December 17-20
This week brings up more Christmas beers and plenty of big imperial stouts: Big Hugs, still more Bourbon County, Toppling Goliath's Monrin' Delight, plus holiday movies and ugly sweater parties. I've been poking around the coding of my little program to bring you fresh beer event news. I've been wanting to make lists that line up behind bullet point and make those bullets into my favorite emoticons. This alteration still has a few hiccups, like changing typefaces here and there, but I am at least happy to be figuring out what to kids these days call "coding...

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, November 9-11

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, November 9-11
It’s another weekend with so much going on. We have a lead-in to next weekend’s Festival of Barrel-Aged Beers, previews for the Bourbon County Stout Black Wednesday/Friday release, and other wintry big beers. I’m finding some places offering specials to veterans for Veterans Day, either Sunday the 11th, or the Monday holiday following. I will... Read more »

Chicago Craft Beer Events, November 5-8

Chicago Craft Beer Events, November 5-8
Hey, did you enjoy that extra hour of drinking or sleeping with the bounce back to Standard Time? Good. Some bars have thought to offer specials on Election Day for people with their "I Voted" stickers, but they were informed that they can't have specials or give away beer for that kind of incentive. Still, be sure to get out there and vote. Meantime, we have the parade of imperial stout releases leading up to Black Friday, and even more events around the Festival of Barrel-Aged Beer, coming up November 16 & 17 (some tickets are still available)...
