The Forge Lemont Quarry's 1st Anniversary (yes, with beer)

The Forge Lemont Quarry's 1st Anniversary (yes, with beer)
I’m dropping a small gallery of photos from a 1st Birthday celebration to which I was invited. On Saturday the 17th, my son and I went to The Forge: Lemont Quarries, an adventure park covering 300 acres around some of the many quarries along the I&M Canal. It had a soft opening last year, with... Read more »

Talking About Beerhead’s “Collab AF” February

Talking About Beerhead’s “Collab AF” February
There is still an assortment of unique beers at the Beerhead Bar & Eatery chain, the result of their “Collab AF” promotion with 37 different brewers in four states. Yeah, they say the “AF” means “All February.” I has a chance to sit with Elonzo King, Beerhead’s Beer Director at their Elmhurst restaurant, where we... Read more »

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, November 1-3

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, November 1-3
Update, October 31: Less than 12 hours after posting this story, we have word that Founders and Evans have reached a settlement in Evans' discrimination lawsuit. Josh Noel lays out the details. As usually happens in a civil suit, details of the settlement aren't disclosed.
I had so far not had much new to add to the controversy surrounding Founders Brewing. Rather, I posted the ongoing story in my Facebook page. But now the issue has come to local establishments choosing to stop carrying their beers. Roots Pizza, part of the Fifty/50 restaurant group, has now re-positioned a Kentucky Breakfast Stout and Canadian Breakfast Stout keg event to a fundraiser for a local charity. The case started last year when Tracy Evans, a former manager at Founders' Detroit tap room, sued the company for racial discrimination. Like most civil cases, this might have dragged on a year or two, leading to a settlement sealed by a non-disclosure agreement. But last week, Detroit's Metro Times published an excerpt from Founders' Detroit general manager Dominic Ryan's deposition, in which he claimed he "didn't know" Evans was black. With Michael Scott-like cluelessness, he went to claim he didn't know whether Barack Obama, Michael Jordan, or former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick were African-American, because he has “never met them.” This has led to fallout in the form of Founders accounts dropping the brand. Graci Harkema, hired in January as Founders’ diversity and inclusion director in an effort to address the lawsuit, quit and then posted her letter of resignation on Facebook, as reported by Josh Noel. We have already seen videos of people pouring their KBS bottles out on the ground (well, they've already got your money; just drink it). And the Detroit taproom has been closed "indefinitely." On a more positive note, we have events building up to next weekend's Festival of Barrel Aged Beer. And the opening of Pollyanna's latest taproom in St. Charles...

Chicago Craft Beer FoBAB Weekend, November 10-12

Chicago Craft Beer FoBAB Weekend, November 10-12
I'm posting a bit early because of the many events going on around the Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beers. Tickets are now sold out, but I have a long list of other events. I'll also be posting early listings for Black Wednesday and Black Friday, since there are more rounds of events involving Bourbon County Stout, and many other barrel-aged beers. And those will be continuously updated as plans fall into place. Stay tuned. Saturday is also Veterans Day, and while a lot of establishments will have discounts or free meals for vets, I knew I couldn't cover all of them, so I focused on the beer-centric ones...
