Chicago Tier 1 Beer Events, January 25-28

Chicago Tier 1 Beer Events, January 25-28
Update: As of Tuesday morning, we see DuPage and Kane counties moving into Tier I restrictions, meaning limited indoor dining. As always, check with any place before you visit, and wear your freakin' mask. This week we've seen Chicago and Cook County move into the Tier I COVID mitigation restrictions, joining Will and Kankakee Counties. That means some limited indoor seating at bars and restaurants. The counties of DuPage, Kane, Lake & McHenry remain under stricter Tier 2 mitigation, but COVID number are trending downward. I'll try to keep up with any announced reopening events in this space...

Chicago's Craft Beer Week for September 21-24

Chicago's Craft Beer Week for September 21-24
What's up beer-wise this week? Oktoberfest specials are ongoing. Noon Whistle opens its second location in Naperville. And Red Arrow in Naperville is rebranding to a Tapville Social. Same self-pour beers, more cocktails, different menu...

Chicago Oktoberfest Beer Weekend, September 18-20

Chicago Oktoberfest Beer Weekend, September 18-20
Oktoberfest is launching at beer bars and brewers across Chicago. And yes, for the quick summary, the first Oktoberfest in 1810 was held on October 18, but as the event grew bigger, it was determined to move earlier in the year so as not to interfere with the harvests. Now, the festival in Bavaria runs for the 16 days leading to the first Sunday in October. Meantime, the new beer and community space, Ørkenoy, is opening this weekend. They're at Kimball and Bloomington in Chicago, at the 606 Trail. And in Naperville, Noon Whistle is opening its second outlet. Personal Note: I finally took the opportunity to visit the reopened Rock Bottom nearest me, in Lombard. Surprised to see the same server from before it closed. She said she had no idea they might ever plan to reopen, but was available when they called. The brewing is currently being supervised by Iain Wilson, brewmaster of the Orland Park restaurant. They've kept some of the beers from the previous version of RB available, including their yearly Rocktoberfest....

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, January 24-26

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, January 24-26
As has been widely covered earlier, the Chicago-based beer blog The Hops Review has closed down after 8 years of business coverage and general interest news. It had a fine run, but the principals have needed to go their separate ways. No doubt there was a lot of expense in keeping up a web site without the support of advertising or endorsements. I myself get a free space and supposedly some Google ad revenue from just ONE of the ads on the right rail. Before the site was flooded with ads advising us how to empty our bowels. And I'll be posting a schedule of places with Super Bowl watching parties, of course. Some may be places that have had craft beer events in the past, but that may not mention specific beers for February 2. Other may normally not be open into Sunday evening, but will have special hours for the game. If you'll be up for the game, be sure to drop me a line...

Chicago Black Wednesday/Thanksgiving Beer Events
All right. Every time I think I have gathered all the Black Wednesday and Black Friday events, still more pop up. The only thing to do now is to post this article early. And take a look: if you can't get in, or don't care to get in on some Bourbon County Stout releases, there  are a kegful of other beers pouring around Chicago! Robot fights? We got 'em...

Craft Beer Review: Noon Whistle Mr. IPA-Nut

Craft Beer Review: Noon Whistle Mr. IPA-Nut
Perhaps I added, in my own small way, to the hoopla over Mr. IPA-Nut, the collaboration between Lombard’s Noon Whistle Brewing and Planters (Kraft Heinz) Peanuts. The beer went on sale just last Friday, and sold out within a few days. At least the few Binny’s I tried had already run out on Monday. So... Read more »
