Chicago Mother's Day Weekend with Beer: May 7-9

Chicago Mother's Day Weekend with Beer: May 7-9

Update: Josh Noel at the Tribune has broken the story Thursday: Half Acre Beer Co. is selling its original 4257 N. Lincoln Ave. brewing space to Hop Butcher for the World. The move will give the contract brewer a permanent space with its own taproom and takeout shop. Half Acre will consolidate operations at its much larger brewery, 2050 W. Balmoral Ave. Hop Butcher, originally South Loop Brewing, started out brewing at the late Aquanaut Brewing, and has been making its fruity IPAs at other locations, primarily Miskatonic. The purchase also affects the nanobrewer Keeping Together (info below), which will continue to brew at the Lincoln Ave. space until October. (Article)

One of Chicago's long-time beer spots is getting a name change. Paddy Long's Beer & Bacon Pub on W. Diversey announced that after 14 years, they have changed their names to Max & Issy’s Pizzeria. The new place is already open, serving New York style pizza with wines and beer.

Chicago Craft Beer Mother's Day Weekend, May 8-10

Chicago Craft Beer Mother's Day Weekend, May 8-10
I've found a few more carry-out events for this Mother's Day weekend. Many more events are announced on the "day of," so please check back. I also have a listing to mark the start of the Illinois Craft Brewer's Guild's new "Passport at Home." Pick up beer from a participating brewer or store and get a "Passport at Home" frame to snap a photo of your purchase and upload to social media. There are also a few more venues venturing to schedule events for further down the calendar, maybe starting late June...

Illinois Craft Beer Week Events, May 10-12

Illinois Craft Beer Week Events, May 10-12
Illinois Craft Beer Week has begun. I am picking out some featured events and adding them to listing that aren't necessarily ICBW related. For a full schedule of IBCW events, check out illinoisbeer.org/icbw/ There's been a lot of local brewery news this week. First off, Vice District Brewing was suddenly evicted from their South Loop space on Tuesday. Guys Drinking Beer has dug into the legal issues, and found that Vice District has had issues with unpaid bills, and legal in-fighting among the principals. They had opened in 2014 as the first brewer in the South Loop area. A production facility opened in Homewood in 2018 had its own set of problems with municipal code and sewer issues. Co-founder Curtis Tarver was  recently elected as State Representative for Illinois’ 25th District. Update (May 9): Vice District has posted a brief message on their Facebook page:
The recent occupancy confusion is a result of ongoing discussion between our entity and the landlord. We are working toward settlement. Vice is looking to reopen soon in the South Loop and continue to operate our Homewood location.
In more positive news: Pollyanna Brewing has been granted a liquor license to open a taproom at 106 S. Riverside Ave. in St. Charles. Pollyanna would share the space with a sports bar/restaurant to be called Flagship on the Fox. One of the partners in the new venture is sports reporter Jarrett Payton, the son of the late Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton. The location had previously housed other businesses, including including River Rockhouse and Chord on Blues. (Kane County Chronicle)
Marz Community Brewing is looking at a second location, a three-barrel brewery and tap room at 1965 N. Milwaukee Ave., a triangular former bank building. (Josh Noel, Chicago Tribune) Greg Shuff, who launched DryHop Brewers and Corridor Brewery and Provisions, is planning a third brewpub in River North, at 600 N. Michigan Ave. The second floor space had been a Heaven on Seven restaurant until it was ordered to vacate in 2015. The new venture, called Crushed by Giants, will share the building with Under Armor and AMC movie theatre. (Josh Noel, Tribune)...

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, May 11-13

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, May 11-13
The schedule is getting busier by the day, with Mother's Day on Sunday, and positioning for Dark Lord Day and Illinois Craft Beer Week on the horizon. I'll be pushing out pages early, then updating often, so check back often! And I admit I won't be able to track ALL of the ICBW events (but then, I'll have some regular events that are not part of the "Week," so I won't feel slighted if you download the app from the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild...
