Chicago Tier 1 Beer Events, January 25-28

Chicago Tier 1 Beer Events, January 25-28
Update: As of Tuesday morning, we see DuPage and Kane counties moving into Tier I restrictions, meaning limited indoor dining. As always, check with any place before you visit, and wear your freakin' mask. This week we've seen Chicago and Cook County move into the Tier I COVID mitigation restrictions, joining Will and Kankakee Counties. That means some limited indoor seating at bars and restaurants. The counties of DuPage, Kane, Lake & McHenry remain under stricter Tier 2 mitigation, but COVID number are trending downward. I'll try to keep up with any announced reopening events in this space...

Here’s number 9 in my reviews of the Black Is Beautiful collaboration series. I asked one of this beer’s makers about how much of the “proceeds” that go to these various organization are generated by each sale. He said he thought it came out to around 25¢ per can. Which comes to a couple of... Read more »

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, January 24-26

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, January 24-26
As has been widely covered earlier, the Chicago-based beer blog The Hops Review has closed down after 8 years of business coverage and general interest news. It had a fine run, but the principals have needed to go their separate ways. No doubt there was a lot of expense in keeping up a web site without the support of advertising or endorsements. I myself get a free space and supposedly some Google ad revenue from just ONE of the ads on the right rail. Before the site was flooded with ads advising us how to empty our bowels. And I'll be posting a schedule of places with Super Bowl watching parties, of course. Some may be places that have had craft beer events in the past, but that may not mention specific beers for February 2. Other may normally not be open into Sunday evening, but will have special hours for the game. If you'll be up for the game, be sure to drop me a line...

Chicago FoBAB Craft Beer Weekend, November 8-10

Chicago FoBAB Craft Beer Weekend, November 8-10
Correction: I had the Toppling Goliath Barrel Slayer release at Binny's entered in the listing for Saturday. The release is on Friday (as in right now, as I type this). Thanks to those who pointed out the mistake. It's the weekend of the Festival of Barrel Aged Beer, at the UIC Forum on the near West Side. Which means several out-of-town brewers are sampling their wares throughout the Chicago region. Keep checking back, there may be more last minute updates. Also, we have another new brewery opening this weekend! 93 Octane Brewery is having their soft opening this weekend in St. Charles, at 825 Lincoln Highway. 93 Octane is managed by members of the family behind the PRIDE gas & convenience stores in Chicago and the western burbs, and will be carrying their canned beer...

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, January 25-27

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, January 25-27
I am trying to get ahead of my usual glacial pace in events, because of more items that you might want to plan ahead for. Sure, I'll have Super Bowl listings for places known for their beer lists. But the Saturday before the game is the Chicago Ale Festival, taking place in Pilsen. Then the following weekend is the Chicago Cider Summit, and then there's Valentine's Day. We'll have some more brewers in Chicago celebrating anniversaries, and a new brewer, Steam Hollow, coming on line in Manteno. It can also be noted that Middle Brow Beer Co. is close to opening its own brewpub is Logan Square (2840 W. Armitage Ave.). The doors could open at any time, once local licenses are cleared. I will try to update this space, and there will surely be a grand opening later, hopefully when it's not so cold. (Chicago Tribune article) As you might notice, there are still samplings and tap takeovers for Bourbon County Stout. Looks like there's not only more of it out there than ever before, but I have been seeing it served at a lot of places that have not been known for good beer offerings...

Chicago Black Friday Beer Weekend, November 23-25

Chicago Black Friday Beer Weekend, November 23-25
Here we are at the high holiday for Chicago beer fans. I’ve had people message me asking about events because they’re flying in from the West Coast, and want to know what else is going on. So hang on. Here’s what’s going on. If you really don’t feel like lining up for BCS starting the... Read more »

Chicago Black Wednesday/Thanksgiving Beer Events

Chicago Black Wednesday/Thanksgiving Beer Events
All right. Every time I think I have gathered all the Black Wednesday and Black Friday events, still more pop up. The only thing to do now is to post this article early. And take a look: if you can't get in, or don't care to get in on some Bourbon County Stout releases, there  are a kegful of other beers pouring around Chicago! Robot fights? We got 'em...
