Guinness' Planned Chicago Taproom: A Q & A with CMO Jay Sethi

Guinness' Planned Chicago Taproom: A Q & A with CMO Jay Sethi
Chicago beer fans last week learned of yet another big player coming to this market with a taproom of its own. Guinness announced in September that it has signed a lease to build a Chicago Taproom in the Fulton Market neighborhood, 375 N. Morgan Street, opening in 2023. The facility will take over an old... Chicago Week in Craft Beer, March 9-12

Chicago Week in Craft Beer, March 9-12
Wednesday Update: As you've no doubt heard, many St. Patrick's events have been cancelled owing to concerns over the COVID-19 virus.  I have not yet heard of any cancellations for these events, but when I do, I will update this page as fast as I can. Venue managers; if you are cancelling or altering your weekend festivities, please let me know, too! While the weekend of St. Patrick's Day celebrations is coming up, the schedule for these weekdays is pretty standards. I am updating these calendars as I find more events, so keep checking in! I am trying to "qualify" St. Patrick's events by checking for those that offer something better than just green beer. And there may just be more events for 312 Day, sponsored by Goose Island for its namesake beer. And I haven't seen anything for Pi Day (3/14) yet, but I'll have an eye out. At the date of this posting, Brewbound reports that Craftworks Holdings has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Craftworks is the parent company of the Rock Bottom brewpubs, and of Gordon Biersch, Old Chicago and Logan's Roadhouse. The company has already closed 37 restaurants in New York, Virginia, Maryland, California, Arizona, Texas, Idaho, Hawaii, Mississippi and Washington, D.C. They have 77 franchise loctions that are not part of the proceeding, and its 261 company-owned outlets will operate as usual for now. Rock Bottom has four brewpub restaurants in the Chicago area. Some of its past brewers include Tim Marshall, who co-founded Solemn Oath, and Pete Crowley, who went on the start Haymarket. The Gordon Biersch operation makes several contract beers for the Trader Joe's chain...

Chicago Craft Beer Events, March 18-21

Chicago Craft Beer Events, March 18-21
Someone rushing to fit in all the last-minute St. Patrick's related stuff into the last article has left most of this schedule ready a little early. Apparently, everybody but me is gearing up for March Madness. But we will see a lot of places open early for the games, or having specials, or their own "brackets" for you to root for a favorite beer. Wait, one of my almas mater, Iowa State, just won the Big 12 Tournament again. Maybe I'll fill in a bracket after all...

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, March 8-10

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, March 8-10
As of Wednesday evening, Saturday's Chicago Beer Fest, at the Field Museum is all sold out. And so is Goose Island's Stout Fest on Sunday. And the presentation on Women in Beer. I'm leaving the listings up for these in case you might want to see if more tickets were "released into the system." But we are rolling into St. Patrick's weekend celebrations, so there's that. And here's a note to check out the page of new Chicago area beer makers coming in the near future. Click the link in the sentence just before this, or the appropriate button above this article's title...

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, March 1-3

Guinness Puts Your Face on a "STOUTie" in Dublin

Guinness Puts Your Face on a "STOUTie" in Dublin
So yeah, a lot of stories can come my way. Some of them just make you want to go “Hmmm”. I can see this kind of technology coming to bars near us soon, so now you can say you read it here first. The Guinness Storehouse, the museum and taproom for the St. James Gate... Read more »

St. Patrick's Day Beers #8: Guinness Draught

St. Patrick's Day Beers #8: Guinness Draught
After writing up some nice Irish Stouts and Red Ales (and Lagers), I wanted to come back to the granddaddy of them all. I can’t really let a St. Patrick’s Day—and in Chicago, it’s never just a “day”—go by without having had at least one Guinness, poured from a nitro tap in a proper setting.... Read more »

Chicago St. Patrick's Weekend Beer Events

Chicago St. Patrick's Weekend Beer Events
Too many ads going around claiming "When the river runs green, it's Miller Time." Since I will never lay claim to being "Chi-Rish," I'll instead point out some event where you'll find good beer. As in, not dyed green...
