It’s entirely possible I may be missing a few more events, as I try to push more of them into these articles, and to prepare for upcoming vacations. I’m expecting that as I find out about events after the publication date of these updates (Wednesday for the weekend calendars, Saturday for the Mon-Thu), I can... Read more »
If weekdays have been a little sparse on events lately, perhaps it's because places have been "saving it" for the Super Bowl and now for Valentine's Weekend. As if that wasn't enough, the following Tuesday is Mardi Gras/Shrove/Tuesday/Pączki Day. There are some related events to watch for. There will be a few more Valentine's dinners added as we draw nearer to the weekend and COVID mitigations continue.
We have not had a lot of events from Back Road Brewery in LaPorte, IN. They simply have not scheduled many, except when they were among the beers being poured at NWI festivals. But now they have closed down after 24 years in business. They had opened the same year as Flossmoor Station and Three Floyds. The ownership has not given a specific reason. (NWI.com
This looks like a short week, populated mainly by food truck stops. And there's nothing wrong with that. But chances are we will have more announcements of beer places closing because an employee tested for COVID-19. And places opening up after scrubbing down...
More of the Black is Beautiful
collaborations have been coming out this week. We have some of the weekend releases here.
During the week, we saw More Brewing forced to cancel a 3rd anniversary event and close both locations because an employee had been exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19 exposure. They have been scrubbing down and hope to re-open soon. But we do see danger signs that Phase 4 of the reopening plan may have to backslide as cases start to increase. I just hope everyone in our community has been excercising good sense...
As you might have figured, the Great Taste of the Midwest in Madison, WI, will not be taking place this August. The event's organizers, the Madison Homebrewers and Tasters Guild,
will be hosting a "Backyard Taste," to make up some of the funds being raised for their local charity beneficiaries. They are taking pre-orders for a Steelys
stainless steel pint cup at $20 each. The fundraiser will go forward if 1,000 pre-orders are received. The process will also involve local site pickups to be determined. Pre-order at this link.
Regrettably, some of the beer establishments that have re-opened under Phase IV of the "Reopen Illinois" plan have had to close, albeit temporarily, when one of their employees tested positive for exposure to COVID-19. This has happened on Saturday at the Werk Force Brewing tap room and Chicago Brew Werks in Plainfield. The employee had last worked there on July 5, and reported feeling ill afterward. Werk Force is closed while the rest of their employees get tested, and will reopen when they can. Sovereign in Plainfield is facing a similar situation...
It's another perfect storm of Cinco de Mayo, Kentucky Derby, "May the 4th," and big beer fests. So most Derby event focus on bourbon; but not all. And a lot of our favorite watering holes might have something light instead of crafty, but food choices are excellent.
And tickets go on sale Sunday for Great taste of the Midwest. You can go to Madison to buy them, or take a chance on the mail lottery...
Is the debut of Star Wars: The Last Jedi
this weekend a craft beer event? Not quite, but there are a lot of beer people who have named beers and scheduled events to celebrate!
And because it's the season, we have plenty of bottle shares and white elephant events. Don't forget your ugly sweater...

More breaking: Six weeks after this announcement was made, Todd posted to his Facebook page that plans for his involvement in the brewery fell through, and he is returning to California to resume production duties at FiftyFifty. It was a great idea while it lasted. “Breaking!” That’s the modern-day equivalent of “Stop the Presses!” And... Read more »
