Chicago Craft Beer Week, December 13-16
The former Ram Restaurant & Brewery in Wheeling could be making beer again. A limited liability company representing District Brew Yards has entered a contract to buy the site and renovate it, adding an exterior deck and redoing the parking lot. The Daily Herald article does not mention whether brewing would continues at the site.... Read more »

Bourbon County Stout 2021 Delivers Different "Woods"
This Thursday (Oct. 21) was another Media Preview for Goose Island’s Bourbon County Stout varietals. It’s the second year in which they’ve sent out packages of beer to a group of beer writers, joining together on Zoom. I count 12 in all. Luckily, they have once again sent bottle stoppers with the eight bottles, ranging... Read more »
Goose Island’s 2021 Bourbon County Stouts: More Wood, Less Fruit
Goose Island Beer Co. has announced the lineup for its 2021 Bourbon County Stout release. This year, there are 8 BCS variants, one more than the seven released in 2020. The list of releases shows five variants aged only in different woods, with only three, including the Chicago-only Proprietor’s release, using adjuncts. One of those... Read more »
Chicago's Week in Craft Beer, February 8-11
There is one more casualty of the beer business fall-off due, partially to COVID: The Hofbraühaus Chicago, in Rosemont, has closed its doors last week. According to the Daily Herald, the location had been going for eight years, but could not keep steady business going outside of Oktoberfest time. But the loss of business during the pandemic was the final straw. Owners Joe and Mike Matuschka indicated that they will reduce the restaurant space in the building and repurpose it as a pizza bar, keeping the brewery equipment.
We are coming into the Valentine's Day weekend. A lot of places will be offering carry-out versions of traditional Valentine's dinners, with beer included, of course. When they had a deadline for ordering or pickup, I will try to get the announcement in the proper deadline date...

Chicago Tier 1 Beer Events, January 25-28
Update: As of Tuesday morning, we see DuPage and Kane counties moving into Tier I restrictions, meaning limited indoor dining. As always, check with any place before you visit, and wear your freakin' mask.
This week we've seen Chicago and Cook County move into the Tier I COVID mitigation restrictions, joining Will and Kankakee Counties. That means some limited indoor seating at bars and restaurants. The counties of DuPage, Kane, Lake & McHenry remain under stricter Tier 2 mitigation, but COVID number are trending downward. I'll try to keep up with any announced reopening events in this space...
Tickets SOLD OUT for Goose Island's BCS Black Friday, but Other Events Coming
Update: As noted, I found this main event was sold out even as I wrote this. But Goose Island now has a BCS Hub page where other events are being posted. I have some more of them below. I got this press release from Goose Island this morning. By the time I could start writing... Read more »

Tasting Notes for the 2020 Bourbon County Stout Lineup
Last year, I had to drop out of the Media event for the Goose Island Bourbon County Stout lineup because of medical complications. Luckily, I was able to avoid getting sick this year. And better for me, the event moved to the houses of each beer writer and nabob involved. Goose Island sent out a... Read more »
