Beer Review: Miskatonic Black Is Beautiful

Beer Review: Miskatonic Black Is Beautiful
Here’s the 100th entry in my “One Take Beer Reveiw” videos on YouTube. So I had been saving this particular ber for the milestone. Just by coincidence, the time to do the review was the final night of the reign of “President” Trump. Sure seemed appropriate. I managed to get to 14 of the local... Read more »

Local Beer Preview: Haymarket Bourbon Barrel Aged Bollocks

Local Beer Preview: Haymarket Bourbon Barrel Aged Bollocks
Time to open and another strong beer after the improbable events of the past week. I have yet another that has been sent to me by the brewers. This is the second beer that Haymarket Pub & Brewery has sent me to commemorate its participation in the Festival of Wood and Barrel-Aged Brewing. The first... Read more »

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, December 13-15

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, December 13-15
I thought I might be able to take it a little easier and get more New Year's Eve events listed. Those are still coming. But I've allowed myself to post a lot of holiday craft fairs that just happen to be at my usual beer making or vending establishments. Add to that ongoing Krampus-focused fun, and releases of dark and barrel-aged beers, and things keep hopping. Just watch for next weekend's listings, with several dark beer releases tied to the Winter Solstice...

Chicago Black Wednesday Beer Week, November 25-28

Chicago Black Wednesday Beer Week, November 25-28
I am getting this posted now, but I still have more Black Wednesday events to post. But I know everyone wants to make their plans. All I can say is that this schedule will be expanding constantly, and I hope to get the Black Friday listing up early as well. And for Thanksgiving Day, I am listing some of the good beer places that have indicated they WILL be open, with with football and all that...

Pre-FoBAB Chicago Craft Beer Week, November 4-7

Pre-FoBAB Chicago Craft Beer Week, November 4-7
I have actually gotten all my saved events into the calendar on Friday night for the week leading up to the Festival of Barrel-Aged Beer, this Friday at Saturday at the UIC Forum. I thought I might finally be making it, but I have been reminded of a family commitment. We shall see. But anyway there will certainly be more events with out-of-town brewers coming in for FoBAB, so be sure to check back...

Chicago Craft Beer Events, March 25-28

Chicago Craft Beer Events, March 25-28
A couple of passings to note in the beer world. Seery Athlone of Addison, which closed its doors in February, finally posted an explanation on Facebook: And Mokena Brewing, which had been chugging along, getting its permits and space in order, suddenly has its space listed for lease. The plumbing and drainage are shown in place, as walls have been roughed in, but no brewing equipment. The listing mentions "Previous operator lost major investor...

Touring Goose Island's Barrel-Aging Warehouse

Touring Goose Island's Barrel-Aging Warehouse
Back in October, I was among this town’s beer writers who got the privilege of touring Goose Island’s new barrel warehouse at 603 N. Sacramento. I also got, of course, a taste of the 2014 Bourbon County Brand Stout and its variants. I’d like to say I held off on offering you this description to... Read more »
