Beer Preview: Ballast Point Sculpin
I’m still running through beers that have been sent to me for my comment. Let’s forge ahead. Ballast Point Brewing Co. was founded in 1996 in San Diego. They built up a national distribution footprint with their flagship Sculpin IPA. I encountered it in the Chicago market in 2013. It was a kind of California... Read more »

Ballast Point Brewing Co. has announced it is closing its Kitchen and Taproom in the West Loop of Chicago. Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, October 16-18

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, October 16-18
We have another beer-related casualty of the COVID pandemic, but hopefully only a temporary one. Ballast Point's Chicago operation in HydePark has posted to their Facebook page:
With the winter months ahead and our ability to generate revenue significantly impacted with limited capacity due to COVID-19, we have made the very difficult decision to shut down operations at Ballast Point in Chicago effective October 24th. At that time, we are halting all on-site retail, brewery production, and taproom operations. Unfortunately, this decision impacts all of our Chicago employees. We are forever grateful for their contributions to our company. Our plan is to reopen this location when the weather is favorable and it is safe to dine indoors.
Ballast Point has some Oktoberfest specials still scheduled for this weekend...

Surprise: Kings & Convicts buys Ballast Point from Constellation
It’s a reversal of the familiar scenario in which a big-name craft brewer is bought out by a multinational “big beer” consortium. This time, the brewer has been bought back from an international consortium. On Tuesday, Kings & Convicts Brewing Co. announced they had purchased Ballast Point Brewing Co. from Constellation Brands. Constellation is a... Read more »

Again I’m working up to the last minute to get more and more holiday events and big beer events into this list. If it seems like there are more beer choices here in Chicago, it’s true! Chicago Craft Beer Events, September 8-10
A long weekend means a short week. But we are certainly not short on events! Meantime, among the tweaks I’ve made to this page is compiling a page indexing all my beer reviews. Just click the “Beer Reviews Index” link above. And I just might have set the page to reject most of those Facebook... Read more »
