Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, May 6-8
This week we have Mother’s Day, of course. Some Kentucky Derby events and a few leftover Cinco de Mayo beer events. And next week we get Chicago Craft Beer Week, starting with Beer Under Glass. More details and I compile the many events going with this. Just when you thought it was safe to go... Read more »
Chicago's Week in Beer, May 2-5
This week we have two more days for opening a beer: one is Cinco de Mayo, which is NOT “Mexican Independence Day,” and “May the Fourth,” which is NOT the anniversary of when “Star Wars” opened in theatres. But have a beer, anyway. Wolfden Brewing in Bloomingdale closed for the weekend and cancelled events until... Read more »
"Black is Beautiful" Beer Review: Funkytown
About a year after the “Black Is Beautiful” project kicked off, I’ve finally been able to update with a new beer, one more by a local Black-owned brewery. “Black Is Beautiful” is a collaboration of 1,200 brewers in 50 states and several countries, organized by Black-owned Weathered Souls Brewing of Texas, to raise awareness of... We have some more comings and goings to report this weekend: I didn’t get the information in time to post it on the schedule, but Knack Brewing & Fermentations held their grand opening last weekend in south Kankakee. Owners Matt and Emily Strysik, with their crew, served 755 beers over their first weekend, according to... Read more »

Box of Chocolates 2022 Collaboration Beer Review
In 2020, four brewers in the western suburbs did a collaboration of sorts. “Box of Chocolates” was a series of imperial pastry stouts, each with a different addition of nuts or chocolate box fruits. I was able to try them on draft at Skeleton Key, and wrote about them here. For 2022, the project returned.... Read more »

Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, April 22-24
We have sad news of another local brewer preparing to close its doors. Ben Rossi at Only Child Brewing in Gurnee has posted news of their closing on Facebook: I am reluctant to inform you that Only Child will be ceasing its brewing and taproom operations, and will be closing the Gurnee location. I have... Read more »
Beer Preview: Sixpoint The Crisp
Time to take the plunge into another beer. This is another one that has been sent to me by the brewer’s reps for my comment. Sixpoint Brewery was start in 2004 in Brooklyn, by Manhattanite Andrew Bronstein and Wisconsinite Shane Welch. The two met while classmates at the University of Wisconsin. Welch, a former homebrewer,... Read more »

Chicago Craft Beer Easter Weekend, April 15-17
I’ve pretty much gotten my calendar back the way I wanted it: by entering new events in my Google Calendar, they are instantly added to the dates below. Apologies for making you scroll through some of the longer date entries. But I also seem to have my SEO chops going; now picking up dozens of... Read more »
