Chicago Beer Weekend, April 1-3

Chicago Beer Weekend, April 1-3
Enjoying Sox Park's beer selection with Nik White, 2018.

Update: Oh, hell’s bells! I was fooling around with my web hosting and somehow managed to blow out my security setting for all of my account. That means I can’t use my happy little Google Calendar tool. So this weekend’s events go back to the “longhand” version, while I try to figure out what I did wrong.

The biggest local beer news this week is the announcement that the Chicago White Sox are bringing back Molson Coors as the main beer sponsor at Sox Park.

The deal ends a five-year sponsorship with Anheuser-Busch that saw Goose Island beers emphasized at the park. Revolution Brewing is also gone; its taproom above left center field will be renamed for Vizzy Hard Seltzer.

It appears the Kraft Cave vending areas will remain, though renamed, and will try to keep its focus on local beers. Goose Island, meanwhile, has announced it’s discontinuing its White Sox Golden Ale. (Josh Noel, Chicago Tribune)

After their brewery was devastated by tornados last June, Skeleton Key in Woodridge has returned to operation. They had a “soft opening” on March 31, and will be planning a Grand Opening in April. The brewer remained in operation with a part-time “Little Key” serving room at the back of the facility, serving beers made in collaboration with other brewers.

I’m out this weekend to visit my folks. I’ll be posting the next schedule article early, and filling it with events as time allows.

On Friday, at noon, we are releasing Small Batch # 37: Kentucky Common. Available in the Taproom only (no crowlers or growlers), Carolyn put her love of history to work in brewing this small batch.
Kentucky Common is one of three or four beers indigenous to America. This beer style is sometimes referred to as “Common” or “Dark CreamAle” and originated in the 1800’s in the Louisville area of Kentucky. The beer was the most popular style in that area until Prohibition in 1919. The beer is a light amber with a white head of foam. The aromas presented are bready, toasty and a slight caramel. There’s a sweetness from the corn addition. The carbonation and corn present you with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel. The low bitterness from the hops is balanced to the bready, toasty malt profile. The beer finishes dry and at only 4.7% you’ll want another!
ABV: 4.7% IBU’s: 20
What is the Small Batch Series? Our Brewer Carolyn has created an experimental series featuring an array of unique recipes which will be available in very limited quantities in the taproom. Keep an eye on social media for release dates and styles.

Kellerbier & Zwickelbier Releases
Goldfinger Brewing Co., 513 Rogers St., Downers Grove, IL (630) 541-9728
On February 25th, we met up with the Pollyanna’s Lemont brewery to brew two completely unpopular styles of lager beer: Kellerbier and Zwickelbier. Why did we brew them? Because they are incredibly complex, delicious, and deserve their time in the sun (figuratively speaking, so they don’t get skunked). These two styles are younger lager beers that posses bolder flavors. These typical German beers would be consumed unfiltered with the yeast still in suspension playing an integral role in the overall quality and experience of the beer. Each one is unique and highly drinkable! We will have these beers available on draft, in mixed four packs, and special glassware for sale beginning this Saturday, April 2nd.

There is NO fee to participate, this is NOT a race, and people of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to join.
The idea of the Olympic Running Club is to stay fit through running. That makes us capable of enjoying even more of the good life – which includes state of the art food and drinks. Obviously our main passion is beer – especially drinking beers – and sometimes (preferably) in large scales.
Speed is not the main target in Olympic Running Club. Having fun and great social relations is our top priority Every first Saturday of the month we meet up for a run, a snack, and maybe a beer or three. You do not have to be an experienced runner or athlete to join the Olympic Running Club …all we ask is for you to come join us and have fun staying healthy – and sometimes a bit tipsy!
