Chicago Craft Beer Weekend: January 21-23

Back in May, Half Acre Beer Co. announced it was selling its original 4257 N. Lincoln Ave. location to Hop Butcher for the World In December, Chicago Eater reported that the purchase has finally gone through. An opening is planned for Spring. Hop Butcher was started in 2011 as South Loop Brewing, but changed its name because they could not be certain of trademark protection. They have contract brewed a number of hop forward beers under contract, usually at Miskatonic.

The Ram Restaurant & Brewery chain closed its Chicago area outlets in 2019. The Wheeling location, 700 N. Milwaukee Ave., has gone up for auction at The auction covers both the restaurant furnishings and its 15 bbl brewhouse. Last we heard, Urban Brew Labs was interested in taking over the space.

Our first ever 12oz can! What! A super approachable package size for such a special brew, we know you’ll dig it. Now on to the beer.
Coffee DinoS’mores 2022 features a washed process Guatemalan coffee grown at Finca San Jeronimo Miramar, which just so happens to be located on the side of a volcano, roasted by our jittery friends at Dark Matter. [As far as we know, Dark Matter has yet to open a coffee shop on the side of a volcano, but we wouldn’t put it past ’em.] Freshly roasted coffee is allowed to rest and off-gas, then coarsely ground and made into a markedly concentrated cold brew. This process we found through years of experimentation may reduce extraction efficiency, but best preserves these remarkable lots of the coffee’s individual nuance and identity. Strong, interwoven notes of baker’s chocolate and the just-perfectly-burnt-edge-of-a-pan-of-brownies flitter back and forth — blurring the line where coffee ends and Imperial Stout begins — before a wallop of dark, sinful berries crescendos to a dallying aftertaste of pralines, tobacco, and French Macarons.
Beginning Friday at noon, Mousetrap will offer Coffee Dino, Mint Dino, and regular Dino on draft along with 2018 Dino bottles and a very limited amount of 375mL bottles of 2021’s Port Barrel Aged DinoS’mores and Double Barrel Aged DinoS’mores for on-site consumption.

First Squirrel Problems is not to be missed, and as it is infused with the spirit of collaboration, it somehow manages to taste EVEN better when shared with friends!
