Chicago FoBAB Weekend, November 12-14

Chicago FoBAB Weekend, November 12-14

While I’m trying to coordinate all these FoBAB-related events and barrel-aged beer releases, I get the news release that’s been rippling through the beer world: Larry Bell, owner and founder of Bell’s Brewery in Kalamazoo, MI has agreed to sell the company to Lion, an Australian brewery holding company that is itself held by the Japanese conglomerate Kirin. Among Lion’s holdings in the US is New Belgium Brewing, which will come together with Bell’s.

Larry Bell started Bell’s in 1985, and has become one of the nation’s largest craft brewers, with distribution in 43 states. Bell has said he was looking to retire, and had no family members willing to take on the company.

Mehndi 2021 Pickup & Meuse Valley Release
More Brewing Co., 126 S. Villa Ave., Villa Park, IL 630-501-1519 Map
& 13980 Automall Dr., Huntley, IL 847-310-7530 Map
Our most decorated stout series makes it’s much-anticipated return today. The pinnacle of our barrel-aged program, the Mehndi vintage series is our expression of nuance.
This year, we blended some of the first barrels filled at our Huntley location. Aging in Elijah Craig 14yr barrels resulted in a rich and complex stout with a very intricate palate. Notes of chocolate fudge, espresso, vanilla, dark caramel and deep oak shine through. A true expression of beer and barrel makes for a decadent, one of a kind experience. It’s the culmination of the many hours our brewers put into guiding our beer on it’s journey and emerging a genuine wood-aged masterpiece. (13% ABV).
Mehndi 2021 will be $25 + taxes/fees per 500mL bottle.
Limit (1) One 500mL bottle per winner per location.
Oznr Draw ends: 10PM on Wednesday, 11/10.
Winners: Selected Thursday, 11/11.
Pickups: Friday, 11/12 – Sunday, 11/28
No proxies. Name on ID must match name of winner.
You may enter the random draw at both locations. However, you must pickup from whichever location you win. No exceptions.
Any bottles not picked up by end of day, 11/28, will be forfeit. All sales are final.

We have another bottle release coming at you this week that we will be featuring as a contender at FOBAB! Named after the beautiful region in Belgium, Meuse Valley is a picturesque Belgian Quadrupel aged in BLiS maple syrup barrels. A strong maple-aroma leads into cornucopia of raisins, dates, figs, and plums that’s followed by complimentary flavors of malty dark sugar and caramel. Moderate warmth resolves with a subtle wine-like character that finishes right back where it began with a strong maple sweetness. (11.8% ABV)
This bottle will be $15 + taxes per 500mL bottle.
Limit (1) One 500mL bottle per location.
This release will available in-person only at both locations.
Supply is very limited and will only be available on a first come, first serve basis.

Triple Release and Anniversary Party

Avec Le Guillotiné with Pink Knit Socks and Barrel Aged Beer for Bowling
Preorder Now! Pickup Begins Friday at Mousetrap It’s quite a week here in Chicago(beer)land… Not only are we launching our latest collaboration with BFFs Metropolitan Brewing, we’re also celebrating Mousetrap’s Fourth Birthday this Saturday, hosting a Triple Release Friday, all the while FOBAB has returned.
We’ll have the three new beers on draft when we open Friday and won’t forget to throw on some Extra Fancy goodies for the anniversary party Saturday. Stay tuned to our social media channels for more on that later this week!
Preorder Now! Pickup at Mousetrap Begins Friday
Avec Le Guillotiné: $20 / 750 mL Bottle, 7.8% abv
Exclusive to Off Color & Metro Brewing
Following in the footsteps of Eeek!, which we brewed with Miller High Life, and Ghost Lemons, made alongside Allagash, Avec Le Guillotiné continues our series of collaborations taking the classic, iconic beers of our very good friends and mucking around with them as much as possible. This time we were fortunate to brew again with Metropolitan Brewing the brewery closest to our hearts where John and Dave both got their first pair of brewing boots wet straight out of brewing school. Known for their classic approach to traditional German lagers, Metropolitan excels in creating fantastic beers which rely solely on using the highest quality ingredients and a mastery of technique. Nothing more than German barley, choice hops, traditional yeast, Lake Michigan water, and some of the finest brewers working in Chicago. So of course we had to go and mess all that up.
Avec Le Guillotiné is a blend of 70% of Generator — Metropolitan’s traditional German Style Doppelbock we brewed with almost the entirety of their brewing and taproom staff here at Mousetrap. After this had fermented out to near completion (and earning Doug’s solemn nod of approval we had done him proud), we then blended in 25% of a native fermented Flemish-style Wild Ale aged in Calvados foedre for a year with raw apple cider, and 5% of an American Wild Ale aged in a puncheon wine barrel with Cabernet Franc grape must.
Pink Knit Socks: $20 / 750mL Bottle, Off Color Exclusive -Only 120 bottles
A small batch riff of our foedre-aged wild saison Socks brewed with Black Limes and African Dried Lemons aged in one of our Sangiovese puncheons with honest to god actual pink lemons and Sangiovese grapes. Vibrant chords of pink lemonade, cherry skins, and tangerines. A welcome hit of summertime lemonade stand joy in stark rebellion to our increasingly gray skies.
Barrel Aged Beer for Bowling: $12 / 16oz 4-pack. 8.0% abv. Off Color Exclusive
Inspired by Dave’s mom’s favorite cocktail, the White Russian, we blended a rich imperial witbier with Jamaican rum barrel aged witbier, creating a creamy mouthfeel paired with notes of coconut milk. Dark Matter Chocolate City coffee blended before packaging adds dark berry and chocolate notes while macerated Madagascar vanilla beans add a sweetness that really ties the beer together. [And yes, there is a regular Beer for Bowling, but it’s an English Mild and hasn’t been released in cans yet, but there’s a preview nitro keg at Mousetrap at the time of this publication.]

One day our log will have something to say and, for us, that is Friday. Behind All Things Are Reasons is a berry-framed Mosaic, Citra, and Solera IPA with more tropics than a Jimmy Buffett concert. Join us Friday for the releases as we break the rules and introduce the log.
