One-Take Beer Preview: Surly Damien (2016)

I have had to go three weeks without any alcohol, owning to prep for and recovery from that “small surgical procedure.” I have complained about in previous articles, suffice to say I’m having my “welcome back to beer” beer. I recorded this video on Halloween night, but I’ve been working  freelance job all week, so I’ve just now gotten to editing the video and posting.

This beer was sent to me by Surly Brewing of Brooklyn Center, MN, along with their 2016 vintage of Darkness Imperial Stout. Damien is listed as a Dark or Cascadian style IPA. Yeah, that used to be a thing before everybody got caught up in pastry and milkshake IPAs. Anyway, it’s subtitled “Child of Darkness”, essentially being fermented fro the “second runnings” of Darkness. It comes in at 6.5% abv, with a dry hop slate described as “tangerine and pine.”

I had expected the hops to have faded from this 750 ml bottle, as I opened it on Halloween night. Yes, I will first point out that it goes pretty good with fun-sized chocolate bars. It pours a slightly spongy tan head above an opaque black body. No off colors from aging, so I lucked out. Smell is a lightly roasty malt, not much else on the side.

Not too much hop stands out on the palate. The dry-hopped may have dwindled out a bit, but it still balanced the malt. It’s a straight-up example of a Black IPA, which can interchange with the idea of a hoppy stout or porter. There a bit extra roast down the middle of the bottle, perhaps playing off some of my Halloween Chocolate.
