Area Winners at the 2019 Great American Beer Festival

Ten Chicago area brewers brought home medals at the Great American Beer Festival, in awards given out Saturday in Denver.
The 33rd edition of the GABF competition saw 283 medals awarded in 107 categories. Judges examined 9,497 beers from 2,295 American breweries.

The Juicy or Hazy IPA category was the most-entered for the second year in a row with 348 entries; 2018 marked the first year Juicy or Hazy IPA (also known as New England-style IPA) was recognized as a GABF competition style. In the Juicy or Hazy IPA category, Chicago’s Old Irving Brewing Co. took home a gold medal for Beezer, Hazy IPA from City Lights Brewing Co. in Milwaukee won silver, and Devil’s Gulch Pond Farm Brewing in San Rafael, California, won bronze.

Category 8: Herb and Spice Beer – 119 Entries
Silver:  One Night in Bangkok Smoothie IPA, Midland Brewing Co., Midland, MI

Category 9: Chocolate Beer – 68 Entries
Gold: Old Balltown Bulleit Bourbon Barrel Aged Salted Caramel Dark Chocolate Brownie Milk Stout, PIVO Brewery, Calmar, IA

Category 12: Specialty Beer – 67 Entries
Gold: Rye Hipster Brunch Stout, Odd Side Ales, Grand Haven, MI

Category 13: Rye Beer – 53 Entries
Silver: Unite the Clans, Third Space Brewing, Milwaukee, WI (also won Silver in 2018)
