World Cup Watching Venues

World Cup Watching Venues

Back when the World Cup was held in the USA in 1996, with opening ceremonies in Chicago, I had maybe two seconds of overseas fame. I was walking around in the Loop, and a German TV crew flagged my attention. The reporter asked if I could please do a little bit: they wanted me to walk up to the camera and say “Soccer!” To emphasize that we Americans are the only ones who called it that, I guess.

And I did get into following the quadrennial tournament, since the USA was in it, as well as countries from which I claimed ancestry. In 2014, I was working at Allstate’s suburban HQ, and quickly found the conference room where everyone was slipping away to catch big screen play. But I had not given much thought to this year’s World Cup since the US team has no skin in the game.

Silly me.

With Chicago being such an international city, and beer having an international cachet, of course people are going to be looking for places to watch the matches (did I say it right? “Matches” instead of “Games?”). And even if your grandparents’ homeland aren’t in the game, it’d be fun to watch another country’s match among their partisans in our town.

So, I am building this list of establishments that promise to have the matches on, and especially those that will be open early. Some of the matches start as early as 5 am Central Time, so we’ll try to make a note.

This is an ongoing project as long as the Cup is ongoing, so please check back often. Meantime, I found a printable Group Stage Schedule with listing in Central Time at this link!
