I’m taking it upon myself to compile a list of brewery tap rooms and brewpubs with the path of totality for the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse. It will become dark and eerie in the middle of the day. Don’t face it without a beer.
The southern half of St. Louis will see totality for less than one minute. There are many more beer places in town where you can catch the darkness. Even for those places which won’t be open for the Monday event, you might still like to turn the weekend into a “crawl” of southern Illinois and environs.
For each location, we have indicated the time at which “Maximum totality” will occur, and how long totality will last. Many of these small brewers and tap rooms are usually closed Monday, but may end up deciding to have special hours. So I’ll be checking back and updating as needed.
Find your own eclipse: This Google Map by Xavier Jubier lets you zoom in to any location with all the astronomical data for that spot you need.
The University of California at Berkeley has an Eclipse Megamovie site with an animation that will simulate the amount of darkness expected at any location.
We pick up the path in the St. Louis area, which is right on the northern edge of totality. Breweries to the north of downtown, like O’Fallon and Urban Chestnut, lie just outside the zone of totality, while other brewers to the south and southwest, get extra time out of the sun. Further west, Columbia, MO will be near the totality line. Kansas City will only see totality in it northern half; Boulevard Brewing is just six blocks from seeing total darkness.

This small town has no brewery, but it will be the “point of longest duration,” at 2 min, 41.2 sec., taking into account the position of the Moon’s mountains and valleys. It’s also where the path of the 2024 total eclipse will cross from southwest to northeast, with a duration of 4 minutes. Full information at makandaeclipse2017.com
