The prizes sought at the annual Great American Beer Festival

Another year, another great American Beer Festival has passed into the books. The three-day festival in Denver, CO included a beer judging competition of 5,507 entries, from 1,309 American breweries. After the judging, 268 medals were awarded in 90 different categories. You can download a PDF of the winning medalists, click to a searchable database of all winners going back the the first GABF in 1983. I have summarized the Midwest winners by state in my own arbitrary arrangement.


Carbondale Craft Beer, Carbondale
Gold: Little Egypt Hefeweizen. Category 68: South German-Style Hefeweizen
First year with a medal.

5 Rabbit Cerveceria, Bedford Park
Silver: 5 Rabbit Golden Ale. Category 46: Golden or Blonde Ale.
3rd medal since 2011
(There was no gold medal in this category)

Flossmoor Station Brewing Co., Flossmoor
Silver: Shadow of the Moon Imperial Stout. Category 15: Other Strong Beer.
23rd medal since 1997.

Half Acre Beer Co., Chicago
Silver: Heyoka. Category 54: American-Style India Pale Ale
First year with a medal! This was the category with the most entries, at 273.

Haymarket Pub & Brewery, Chicago
Gold: Defender. Category 83: American-Style Stout
Second medal since 2011

Horse Thief Hollow, Chicago
Bronze: 18th Rebellion. Category 28: Kellerbier or Zwickelbier
First year with a medal!

RAM Restaurant & Brewery, Schaumburg
Silver: White Eagle Smoked Wheat. Category 19: Historical Beer
First year with a medal (previously, the three RAM Restaurants in Illinois have entered together, and won two medals. In addition, the Wheeling RAM won Silver in the 2012 Pro-Am competition with Pointon’s Proper, an English Mild by homebrewer Scott Pointon.

Silver: Gatecrasher IPA. Category 50: English-Style India Pale Ale

Two Brothers Brewing Co., Warrenville
Gold: Sour Beer #2. Category 26: Wood- and Barrel-Aged Sour Beer

2nd medal since 2012 (first was for the same beer).

Sun King Brewery, Indianapolis
Gold: Lonesome Dove. Category 25: Wood- and Barrel-Aged Strong Beer
Silver: Barrel Aged 666: Sympathy for the Devil.  Category 25: Wood- and Barrel-Aged Strong Beer
14th and 15th medals since 2010! That’s slipping. In 2011 they won seven medals!

(These are both part of the MillerCoors behemoth headquartered in Chicago, and this is the only category in which Miller or Coors labels have medaled. No medals to anything named “Budweiser”)

Bastone Brewery, under brewmaster Rockne Van Meter, was also named Small Brewpub and Small Brewpub Brewer of the Year

The GABF, held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, has over 49,000 attendees, sampling from among 3,500 beers.
