John G. Shedd Aquarium, 1200 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago
Shedd Aquarium and Revolution Brewing continue to grow their commitment to sustainability as they quench your thirst with Penguin Hops, limited-edition harvest ale, brewed with hops grown in Shedd’s sustainable gardens.
To kick-off its third season, Shedd is hosting an exclusive Penguin Hops Release Party in partnership with Revolution Brewing and 93.9 MY FM. Guests will enjoy a truly local, flavorful taste of Penguin Hops while listening to live music from American Idol winner, Caleb Johnson. The night will kick off with a science pub presentation from Shedd penguin expert, Lana Vanagasem and Revolution’s head pub brewer, Will Turner.
Revolution Brewing and partnering establishments will donate a portion of the proceeds to support the aquarium’s global and local conservation initiatives. Last year, the successful partnership raised generous funds for Shedd and as the weather cooled off this year, the opportunity to harvest the hops and partner with the popular Logan Square brewery again presented itself.
Hops are one of the most sustainable of Shedd’s organically cultivated garden plants, which also include durable native flowers and grasses, heirloom vegetables and rain-loving plants that drink in runoff from the aquarium’s front terrace. Like many of the 1000-plus strategically planted foliage plants surrounding the iconic Chicago building, the aquarium planted the hops nearly a decade ago to be visually pleasing and purposeful. The vine-growing plant helped enhance the aesthetic look on some of the exterior walls of marine mammal pavilion’s re-imagination in 2009. To keep the unexpected bounty of hops from going to waste, Shedd teamed up with local microbrewery Revolution Brewing in 2012 to create a craft beer. The resulting harvest ale, Penguin Hops, was named after the aquarium’s rockhopper penguins.
Penguin Hops brew will also be on sale starting October 29 at Revolution’s Brewpub (2323 N. Milwaukee Ave.), Revolution’s Tap Room, (3340 N. Kedzie.) and at select Chicago establishments to be determined.
Tickets: Adults – $18/person ($9/person for members) and Children – $16/person ($7/per person for members), available online here.

6:00 – 10:00 pm ♦ 5 Rabbit Beer Release Party
Plank Road Tap Room, 39W149 Plank Road, Elgin, IL (224) 238-3527
The guys from 5 Rabbit will be out at our Tap Room for the release of their newest beer collaboration with Cigar City!
El Bizarrón: Export Porter brewed with Caramelized Plantains
When we began brainstorming ideas with Cigar City for our collaboration beers, the vision quickly took on a Cuban theme- specifically cuisine. The result, a pair of delicious beers; the one being brewed at 5 Rabbit, made with super-ripe plátanos maduros. Several layers of dark malts provide a rich base and the caramerlized plantains offer a creamy texture and delicious taste. We put a lot of love and labor into this beer: we peeled, sliced and caramelized 2400lbs of ripe plantains by hand!
El Bizarrón is the hero of a Cuban folktale. A simple worker who outsmarted the devil, winning his freedom as well as a load of silver, kicked to the heavens loaded on his faithful burro, way up high where he knew the devil couldn’t follow.

We’ll be joined by our friends from Rude Hippo who will share stories about their crowdfunding success (and some good beer, too). But don’t forget to bring something to contribute to the group! Bringing a 6 pack is encouraged (we are a drink tank after all) but not required. (If hops aren’t your style, snacks and/or soda make welcomed contributions, too.)
