UPDATE, Dec. 8: Niall reports that Founders Vice President Dave Engbers will attend Saturday’s Ultimate Beer Bout, and he’ll be bringing a keg of their prized Kentucky Breakfast Stout! The Bourbon barrel aged imperial stout will replace harvest Ale in the Founders lineup, though Harvest Ale will still be available for sale. They have secured a keg of Bell’s Batch 10,000, but that will be reserved for a tapping party on January 5.
Niall Freyne of Tribes Alehouse in Mokena has forwarded me the list of beers going head (ha!) to head in his December 11 Ultimate Beer Bout III: “Michigan Mayhem!”
Beers from Michigan brewers Bell’s and Founders will be paired in a seven round matchup, with ticket holder votes determining the winner of each round. A representative of the champion brewer will be presented with a coveted UBB Championship belt. In case of a tie, a surprise beer will be judged.
Here are the beers that will fight for the honor of each brewer:
- Looking Glass (Brandy Barrel Aged Double Trouble – 11%)
- Red’s Rye P.A.
- Dirty Bastard Scotch Ale
- Newaygo County Cherry (Barrel Aged Cerise – 8.5%)
- Black Biscuit (Old Ale – 10.5%)
- Harvest Ale Kentucky Breakfast Stout
- Kalamazoo Stout
- Batch 9,000 (Possibly 10,000 may appear instead)
- 2009 Expedition Stout
- Two Hearted Ale
- 2009 Sparkling Ale (Tripel)
- Bourbon Barrel Aged Hell Hath No Fury
The event starts at 12 Noon. However, it is sold out, and the bar will have to close to accommodate all ticket holders. They will reopen once the competition concludes, about 5:00 p.m. Everyone will get a chance to applaud the winner and drink whatever contest beers remain.
(My amazing psychic powers were only half-right in predicting that Bell’s 10,000 will may be there. But it turns out I’m right about predicting the presence of kentucky Breakfast Stout! And my 10-year streak in predicting the cover of every Oprah magazine remains!)
If you want to get in on this event, plans are underway for Ultimate Beer Bout IV: The Battle Across the Lake, pitting Dark Horse of Michigan vs. Tyranena of Wisconsin. The date will probably be has now been finalized for Saturday, February 26. Expect the same ticket pricing as for UBB III: $35 per person ($10 for Designated Drivers) to drink 14 beers in seven rounds, plus a commemorative glass. Check here for an announcement, or track Tribes website and Facebook page.
