But Slogans Need Staffing, Mr President

The history of nations is often a history of slogans. People respond to powerful calls to action. Especially when the slogans are easy to believe, and simple to understand.

Turns out the best of them have had the best results. Starting with our “No Taxation Without Representation”….the French “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity”….Lincoln’s “A House Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand”….Roosevelt’s “Remember Pearl Harbor”….Kennedy’s “A New Frontier”….and now “Make America Great Again.”

A closer look at history’s most successful slogans always shows successful staffing. You have to put your best people in charge of your best ideas, otherwise they remain still born. In our case, there was Washington. The French eventually turned to Robespierre. Lincoln tried until he found Grant. Roosevelt had MacArthur and Eisenhower. Kennedy his brother Bobby.

Who does the current President have? So far he hasn’t been able to hire and hold a consistent staff to kick start his slogan. It’s hard to believe he doesn’t have the available talent. Or the backing of large numbers of voters.

Supporters blame the President’s detractors. The critics blame the President’s delusions. The critics have a point, for real “greatness” rises out of leadership, not showmanship. Perhaps he is still thinking about us last job on Reality TV….
