Honesty-Is-The-Best-Policy. Oh Yeah! Sez Who?

Come on, honestly, when’s the last time you were completely honest…? About how you answered their how-do-I-look-in-this question? About why you’re voting-for-X-not-Y? About what you think of gay marriage, abortion, or organized religion?

If it takes you awhile to count, maybe it’s because you haven’t done it lately. And why should you? Honesty is rarely the best policy that we teach our kids. At least in society. It’s something like baring yourself in a bathing suit at a formal dinner party and expecting the guests to applaud. Nobody wants to know THAT much about you. Nor do they want you knowing that much about them.

We call this by various names: good taste…polite society…political correctness….situational ethics. Take your pick, they’re all the same. “When it’s better for them not to know the truth, sometimes I may need to lie. After all, it’s for their own good.”

OK, that’s OUR rationale for lying. What’s the rationale of the four campaigners? “When it’s better for them not to know the truth, sometimes I may need to life. After all, its for their own good.”
