The healthy dessert that tastes exactly like ice cream

banavicNo lie. This healthy, frozen treat tastes exactly like ice cream. The secret to its rich, creamy texture is–get this–the AVOCADO! Yes, the nutritionally dense avocado!

By the way, we’re not talking about a dessert that tastes similar to ice cream. Or kinda sorta like ice cream. This baby has the taste and looks and mouth-feel of actual soft-serve ice cream.

It’s even better than soft-serve ice cream. Because it’s guilt-free. You can lap up every luscious spoonful and savor it, not only knowing there’s nothing in it that’s bad for you, but that it’s really good for you!

It’s easy to make, too.


The basic ingredients are: banana, avocado and a bit of milk (any kind, including soy or almond milk), plus a few other  flavor boosters, all of which you load up into a food processor. Amazingly, there’s absolutely no sugar in it– just a smidget of honey.

In the last post, “Ten healthy things to eat when you really really really want cake,”  I discussed making  soft-serve-ice-cream-like concoctions with sliced frozen bananas. Here’s one recipe and here’s another. Both versions make delicious summer desserts.

But neither one reaches the heights of divine-itude (Yes, I’m aware it’s not a real word) that this banana-avocado combo does.

For obvious reasons, I’m calling this treat Banana-Avocado Soft-Serve Ice Cream. But the name doesn’t do it justice. There’s no cream in it. And it really doesn’t taste like banana or avocado. It takes on the taste of whatever flavors you add to it.

In the case of the recipe below, the flavor is a bit nutty. You can use almonds or pistachio nuts. But adding pistachio nuts, along with some almond flavoring, will up the ante quite a bit.

And with its lovely light green color, the ultimate result ends up being a dead ringer for pistachio ice cream, one of my personal favorite ice cream flavors.

About the almond flavoring: I know, I know. It’s really expensive. But I found it was priced the lowest at Wal-Mart: under $4 for two ounces.

Banana-Avocado Soft-Serve Ice Cream

2 ripe bananas, sliced and frozen
1 ripe avocado
1 t. vanilla
t. almond extract (optional)

1/8-1/4 cup milk
2 t. honey (or to taste)
1/8 cup chopped, toasted almonds (or chopped pistachio nuts)

Place frozen banana slices, the flesh of an avocado, vanilla (and almond extract if desired) and honey in food processor bowl. Process a a few times to break up bananas. Then process until they’re an icy consistency. It may take a minute or two. If necessary, open top and press bananas down into bowl.

Add nuts. Replace processor top. While food processor is running, add milk through feedtube and process until you see that the mixture now resembles soft-serve ice cream.

Open the processor, spoon the dessert into bowls and eat immediately. Serves two.
