What not to buy me for Christmas

I was in Bed, Bath and Beyond the other day, and I was amazed to find that cupcakes have taken over the holiday season. There were cupcake-related items on display everywhere.  It was literally cupcake Christmas overkill.

My curiosity got to me  so I did a bit of  online investigating and found out that not only did Bed, Bath and Beyond offer 141 things cupcake-related, shockingly, Target had a whopping 281 cupcake-related items (which was up from the day before when the store offered 279) for sale. Not one of these things was actually edible.

Don’t buy me a single one of them.

OK, I must admit I’m not that crazy about cupcakes. I know. I know. Just about everyone else is. But I’m not a cupcake hater either. I mean, who can hate a cupcake? I’ve written about cupcakes on the blog and even had a guest blogger, Erin Nederbo,  give out her five favorite cupcakes in Chicago on a Sugar Buzz Chicago post earlier this year.

It’s just that I’m not cupcake-obsessed. It’s not as though I haven’t chowed down on some excellent cupcakes. I even went on a cupcake tour given by Chicago Chocolate Tours, which was loads of fun and provided an array of scrumptious and lovely looking cupcakes from first-rate bakeries. But my favorite cupcake really isn’t a cupcake. It’s the decadent Mud Pie at Angel Food Bakery, which is actually a killer flourless chocolate cake in cupcake form.

I get  it that cupcakes are cute and portable. But they don’t taste any better than a piece of cake. So why can’t I just have that? Or the myriad other desserts that I’d prefer to indulge in? Or bake? Cupcakes are  more labor intensive to create than many other desserts.

Sorry to get so worked up about cupcakes. But the bottom line for me is:  If you buy me cupcakes, I’ll be grateful and happy.  But cupcake-related items?  Maybe they’re on your Christmas list, but they’re not on mine.  Here are some things not to buy me this season (along with some photos below):

Babycakes Mini Cupcake Maker
Halo Cupcake Print Blanket
Betty Crocker Bake ‘n Take Cupcake Pan/Carrier
Wilton Cupcakes ‘n More Dessert Stand
“You Are My Little Cupcake” Book
Sweet Cupcakes Hostess Apron
Chicago Metallic Cupcake Plunger
Confections Cupcake Mugs
Vanilla, Chocolate and Cherry Cupcake Wall Art
Yankee Candles Vanilla Cupcake Scented Candles
Wilton Giant Cupcake Pan
George Foreman Evolve Grill 6-Serving Cupcake and Muffin Insert
Zombie Cupcakes (paperback book)
Skull Cupcake Pan
Strawberry Cupcake Coin Bank
Airblown Inflatable Cupcake
Trend Lab Cupcake Window Valance
Merry Cupcake Cookie Jar
Cupcake-print pajamas

And scores of cupcake books and childrens’ products, most of which are beyond adorable.  But really, enough is enough. I’m cupcaked out.

Is there anyone else who is not that in love with cupcakes? Or am I alone on this one? Please let me know.

  • Funny! Reminded me of a blog my sister-in-law sent me that you may enjoy: http://www.bonappetit.com/blogsandforums/blogs/badaily/2011/12/10-holiday-gifts-not-to-get-co.html

Thanks so much. I'll take a look...And thanks for reading the post!

  • Very funny, Judy!
Happy (or not so much) National Cupcake Day!http://www.punchbowl.com/holidays/2011/12/15/national-cupcake-day

And, actually I have to say, I'm one of the cupcake loving freaks of the world. Ever since I bit into my first Buttercup Bake Shop vanilla cupcake in NYC almost a decade ago :) Had them at my shower and my wedding instead of cake.

Hopefully, we can still be friends :)

  • In reply to FernRonay:

Well, cupcakes are cute; that's for sure. I'm sure they looked fabulous at your shower and your wedding. I guess I'm just suffering from cupcake overload. Maybe there's a vaccine for that!? Of course, we can definitely still be friends. I treat my cupcake-loving friends exactly same as anyone else! Happy Holidays! Thanks for reading and writing!

  • I agree. I'm not interested in any non edible cupcakes, but clearly someone is buying them.

There are many desserts WAY higher up on the list than cupcakes.

  • In reply to Yoga Mom:

I have to say again that I don't hate cupcakes. But, like you, Yoga Mom, I have some other favorites. For one thing, I'm an ice cream lover. How about you?
