Avocado ice cream?

Avocado ice cream at Tanzitaro

Let’s get one thing straight. When it comes to ice cream, there’s nothing wrong with vanilla. Or for that matter, chocolate or strawberry. But recently, I finished off an excellent meal with Avocado ice cream. It was at Tanzitaro, a pleasant Mexican cafe in Norwood Park.

If you’re thinking, “Yuck! Guacamole for dessert,” you’d be way off base. Think vanilla ice cream with a hint of avocado flavor. And a texture that’s smoother, richer and creamier going down than ordinary vanilla. (Was it the avocado? Who knows?)

This frozen treat is made-from-scratch by a “secret” source,” says Tanitaro’s owner Juan Jimenez, who worked at Lettuce Entertain You restaurants for decades. Jimenez advises trying the Tequila and Pomegranate ice cream. What a great way to get your fruits and vegetables!

Have you tried any oddball ice cream flavors? Tell us about it!

  • a friend of mine was traveling all over the world several years ago and whenever she hit civilization she would email me interesting things that she did along the way. when she was in the wilds of africa someone got her to try a milkshake made with milk, chocolate syrup and avocados. that combination totally intrigued me until i finally got out the blender and did it! and it was delicious... this avocado ice cream reminds me of that little episode!
