Some good news among a sea of tragedy…A story about the good people that do still exist in this world.
A drunk driver crashed into one of Chicago’s last independent newsstands (58th and Indiana) a few days ago; completely demolishing it while the owner was inside. After a short stay in the hospital, today the owner is working from her car on the same corner where the structure once stood for 30+ years. A regular customer (Mike Owens) comes by, finds out the story and volunteers to help. He calls a contractor (PAC Leaders) and they volunteer to rebuild this South Side Treasure. So with donations in and with the owner working from her car, there is hope in her eyes as volunteers build. The volunteers include professionals and several students who are learning trades (ex. Carpentry). The volunteer students are also getting the message of having a good heart and using their talents to build community.
Thank you to everyone who made this possible.
