Over Valentine’s Day weekend Taste Tester #1 and I hopped a plane out of cold Chicago to San Francisco! We were lucky that we had three beautiful days of sunshine over our visit which made all the walking we did (27 miles!) that much more enjoyable. Our goal was to eat and drink our way through the city, stopping at top tourist destinations along the way.
I’ve written two posts so far in a series of five about the trip so feel free to follow along on my new blog Beyond ExpecTASTEtions.
We arrived late on a Wednesday night and made our way to TT#1’s sister and boyfriend’s favorite local sushi joint, Sakesan Sushi and Bistro which reminded me lot of my favorite place in Chicago, Toro. They had super creative maki rolls, fresh sashimi, and of course oysters! Check out the full post here!
Our next day started off with a visit to Alcatraz where we learned all about the island’s varied history and saw an amazing art installation by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. I’m usually the first one to get bored in a museum-type setting but Alcatraz was very interactive and I found myself really sucked into the audio tour! I especially loved hearing the prisoner’s personal stories as well as the children and families who lived on the island in the shadow of the prison. You can read the full post about my experience on Alcatraz here.
Over the next week or so I’ll have posts on Beyond ExpecTASTEtions about my visit to Stones Throw restaurant, Chinatown’s best dumplings at Lai Hong Lounge, and my favorite bits and pieces about the city.
